As the Israel-Hamas war crosses the seven-month mark, negotiations are apparently stalled to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, and Israeli forces continue to launch incursions in the southern Gazan town of Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. Israel said it killed two Hamas commanders — fulfilling its goal — in its strike on Rafah, which also killed 50 Palestinians and injured at least 249 others in a displaced persons camp on Sunday. The explosion and subsequent inferno at the camp remains under investigation, IDF chief spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari told reporters Tuesday.
Former President Donald Trump is on trial in New York City, where he is facing felony charges related to a 2016 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Trump last April pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment charging him with falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment his then-attorney Michael Cohen made to Daniels in order to boost his electoral prospects in the 2016 presidential election. Assistant district attorney Josh Steinglass began his closing argument by quoting the People's opening.
The Democratic National Committee will move to conduct virtual party proceedings to certify President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party nominees before Ohio's Aug. 7 ballot certification deadline, and before their in-person convention beginning Aug. 19, the party confirmed to ABC News on Tuesday. This will take a big moment away from Biden and the party -- the official nomination at convention is typically met with fanfare and celebration, but he will become the official nominee virtually, without the pomp and circumstance. The move came moments before the Ohio Senate convened on Tuesday for a special session to address Biden's ability to appear on their general election ballot in November -- which the GOP-led legislature has tied up with a separate bill related to campaign finance, something Democrats oppose.
The flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza over the U.S. Army's temporary Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) system has been paused after rough seas caused parts of the pier to detach, a U.S. official told ABC News Tuesday. At a press briefing on Tuesday an Israeli Defense Forces official also confirmed that JLOTS is not functioning after parts broke off during high seas off the coast of Gaza. The sea conditions in the eastern Mediterranean off the coast of Gaza have already caused issues for the U.S. Army's temporary pier system, intended to create a maritime corridor for international aid to be delivered from Cyprus into Gaza.

The federal judge overseeing former President Donald Trump's classified documents case denied the special counsel’s motion requesting that Trump be barred from making statements that could pose a significant risk to law enforcement. Trump's lawyers argued that the special counsel violated Local Rule 88.9, which says both parties must "meet and confer" before flings motions so the court and the parties' time is used efficiently. Judge Aileen Cannon said the special counsel's "conferral" with Trump's lawyers is "wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy."

Thirty-six days ago, prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney's office set out to convince a jury of twelve New Yorkers that Donald Trump broke the law by hiding damaging information from voters. During closing arguments Tuesday, they'll attempt to convince that jury to convict the former president on 34 felony counts -- a historic decision in what could be the only one of Trump's criminal cases that reaches a verdict before the 2024 election. Prosecutors built their case across four weeks of testimony, calling 20 witnesses including Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress whose hush money payment sits at the center of the case; Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer who made the payment to Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election; and multiple Trump Organization employees who helped orchestrate Cohen's alleged reimbursement in 2017.
