Nail the rules

The objective of Euchre is to work with a partner and score the most points. You do so by bidding on and winning tricks and blocking your opponents from winning their bids. Euchre is played with a 24-card deck and 4 players.

The player on the dealer's left starts the first trick. Players follow the led suit if they can; if not, they can play any card. The highest card of the led suit or trump suit wins the trick and leads the next one. If a trump card is played, the highest trump wins. Euchre has "trumping in" and "overtrumping": players use a trump card if they don't have the led suit, and if partners play trump, others can play higher trump. A trick win earns a point, and the game continues until all 5 tricks are played.

Euchre is scored as a series of hands. For each hand, the partnership that selected trump is known as the makers. The other team are the defenders. Scores are calculated as follows:

  • The makers score 1 point for winning 3 or 4 tricks.
  • The makers score 2 points for winning all 5 tricks.
  • The makers score 4 points for winning all 5 tricks if a member of the maker's team played alone.
  • The defenders score 2 points for winning 3 or more tricks.
  • The defenders score 4 points for winning 3 or more tricks if a member of the defender's team played alone.

After each hand, your hand score is added to your match score. The match ends when either partnership's match score is 10 points or more.

Trick: A finite round or unit of play that is evaluated to determine a winner

Trump card: At the start of each hand, a card is drawn to decide the trump suit. Cards of that suit become more valuable than others for that hand.
