About Chess

Chess is a classic 2-player strategy board game. In this battle of intellect, players use tactics and foresight to outmaneuver their opponent's pieces, with the ultimate goal of checkmating the opponent's king. Play another player or against a computer instead.

Nail the rules

The objective of Chess is to checkmate your opponent’s king.

Take turns moving their pieces across the board, following specific rules for each piece type.

Each type of piece can move in the following ways:

  • King: Moves 1 square in any direction.
  • Queen: Moves diagonally, horizontally, or vertically any number of squares.
  • Rook: Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
  • Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.
  • Knight: Moves in an L-shape, jumping over other pieces.
  • Pawn: Moves forward 1 square (2 squares on its first move), captures diagonally, and promotes to another piece upon reaching the eighth rank.

Check: If a king is under attack, it's in check. The player must make a move to protect the king. If there's no legal move to do that, the game ends, and it's checkmate.

Checkmate: When a player's king is in check and there's no way to move it safely, it's checkmate. The player loses, and the game is over.
