About Backgammon

Backgammon is a 2-player board game of skill and strategy. Players compete to move their pieces off the board while blocking their opponent's progress. Compete against another player or against a computer. With roots spanning centuries, it offers a fun challenge for all.

Nail the rules

The objective of Backgammon is to beat your opponent by moving all of your checkers around the board and removing them from play.

To start, both players roll 1 die. The player with the higher roll goes first, using both dice numbers combined.

Players take turns, rolling 2 dice at the start of each turn. Move your checkers based on the number you roll. Checkers move forward only.

Your opponent's checkers move in the opposite direction. You can move onto unoccupied points or points with your own checkers, or points with 1 opposing checker.

If you land on an opponent's blot (a single checker), it goes to the bar. Checkers on the bar re-enter from your opponent's home board, based on dice rolls.

When your checkers are in your home board, you can start bearing them off. Roll dice matching the point to bear off a checker. You can bear off from lower points if no checkers are on higher points.

Each game is worth 1 point. If the doubling cube is used, players can "double" the stakes. The winner of the game decides. If the doubler wins, stakes double; if the opponent wins, stakes stay the same.

If you win a game before your opponent starts removing their checkers, you get 2 points. This is called a gammon.

If a player wins a game while their opponent still has checkers in the winner's home board or on the bar, the winner scores 3 points instead of 1. This is called backgammon.

If you bear off all 15 checkers before your opponent starts taking theirs off, you win a gammon.
