Why You Want to Watch Aziz Ansari’s "Food Club"

Do you wish Aziz Ansari had his own show? One in which he wore a captain’s hat and sailed a yacht while eating lobster and drinking Champagne? One with fuzzy camera work? And maybe one of those dudes from “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”?

Wish granted! “Food Club” has all those things: Three dudes and their assistant—who goes by the dubious moniker Swab Yang—roam Los Angeles searching for eating experiences worthy of their Food Club plaque, which looks rather like something you won in seventh grade for good team effort.

The first episode is live, and includes: faux-English voiceover, taco shops, bánh mì joints, underground supper clubs (Wolvesmouth), more captain’s hats and upscale restaurants (seafood eatery Son of a Gun). When awarded his plaque, Son of a Gun co-owner Vinny Dotolo says, quite dryly, “Ah, what an honor.”

At Wolvesmouth, the production values suddenly go through the roof and you can see just how gorgeous the cuisine looks, so expect at least some parts of this show to make you hungry. Our favorite moment is at 8:06, when Food Club Captain Eric Wareheim shows how to properly taste food and looks quite like a hamster at his water spout. So go, watch. And try not to think about “The Love Boat" too much; you’ll just get confused.
