Vegemite Pizza, Not Coming to America Any Time Soon

Vegemite + molten mozzarella: Do these toppings equal the greatest pizza in the world? Pizza Hut, which has become known for its crazy flavors, asks just that question in the video above. In the company’s new Australian commercial, which made Adweek’s top five this weekbackpackers from around the world are polled for their thoughts on the new Mitey Stuffed Crust pizza, a limited-edition flavor available down under

To wit: Vegemite is a brown, sticky paste made from yeast extract—basically concentrated, bottled brewer’s yeast—and is quintessentially Australian. (See: Men at Work’s ‘Down Under’.)

So, what do the young hostel-goers think of the ‘mite-stuffed stuff? The French, Germans, Spanish, Chileans—even the Brits—thought it was “disgusting,” and tasted like “petrol” and “fish jam.” The Australians? “Mm, it’s nice. I really enjoy it. I’d have it for breakfast, I reckon.” Proof that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

The Mitey Stuffed Crust isn’t coming to America any time soon, but if you happen to be in Australia, give it a go. Australia Day is January 26, after all.

Other crazy things people eat:

Marmite, Vegemite’s cousin

Haggis in Scotland

Natto in Japan
