The Best Foods to Eat in Bed

Exactly 45 years ago Tuesday, John Lennon and Yoko Ono hit the mother of all snooze buttons and staged their first "bed-in," a day of lounging in pajamas without leaving the cozy comfort of their pillows and blankets.

It was a statement for world peace, which sadly seems as far away today as it did in 1969. We could all use another bed-in, don’t you think? Of course, a proper lounge-about requires some serious sustenance. Yes, we’re talking snacks in bed.

We know what you’re thinking: Isn’t that a recipe for disaster? Not so, according to one of our food editors and master in-bed eater: “I would argue personally that anything can be eaten in bed (and is by me, at least), it’s more about the proper tools and chest placement (for shoveling) than food type.” Truth!

Take a look at some of our fave in-bed edibles below, and don’t be afraid to give them a whirl this weekend, perhaps during your own personal bed-in?

Tomato soup. Beds are where we go to get comfortable, so it follows that one best enjoys comfort foods in bed. To minimize spillage, skip the bowl entirely and use a mug instead. (Forgo a spoon, for that matter.) Just to be safe, heat your soup to soul-warming instead of scalding hot.

Toast with mashed avocados. This easy-to-make snack is perfect for lingering mornings spent watching sitcom re-runs on TNT. Add a drizzle of chili oil for some added zing. Bonus: pair it with a cup of coffee carefully perched on your nightside table.

Cold lo mein, straight from the carton. Bed-ins are supposed to be relaxing. Who has time to properly heat up Chinese leftovers?

Cheese and crackers. We wouldn’t kick someone out of bed just for eating crackers. And cheese. As long as they share. (Use a plate to catch stray crumbs.) For a fully stylish bed-in effect, treat yourself with high-brow crackers and a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth cheese like this washed-rind, raw cow’s milk number from Jasper Hill Farm.

Cranberry scones. Remember that cup of coffee you enjoyed with your toast? You could also pair it with a sweet-and-tart, fruit-flecked scone.

Beef chili. The cozier you are, the more successful the bed-in. (According, very scientifically, to us.) Warm chili heats you up from the inside out. Scatter shredded cheddar cheese and a dollop of Greek yogurt on top for more creamy comfort, then add a hit of chile flakes to heat things up.

Meatballs. Lazy meatballs. Spring meatballs. Swedish meatballs. Any meatballs, in a big bowl, in your lap (or balanced on your chest) will do.

Enjoy your bed-in, and don’t worry if you make a bit of a mess. What’s the use crying over a dropped meatball? We never said world peace would be easy.
