Japan Has Some Crazy Food Gadgets — and They’re Not Easy to Use

Japan is home to great innovations in the food world — see sushi, cat cafes and the multitude of flavors of Kit-Kat available in the country as examples.
But there are some Japanese food tools that are just too baffling for Americans.

BuzzFeed gathered several young people try out popular Japanese tools to trick out otherwise mundane snacks. The tools left many perplexed and others nervous, but all highly entertained.

A juicer called the Takara Tomy Gurefuru Chuchu is as confusing to operate as it is to pronounce to most people who try the gadget. The tool is supposed to turn an orange into a portable beverage by piercing the skin with a mini grinder and mashing the pulpy insides.

“You’re telling me Japanese children do this?” said one skeptical tester.

Japan’s Sonna Choco Banana fills your banana with chocolate, which we admit sounds amazing, but its cylinder-like structure seemed incongruous to a banana’s natural curves. The Japanese directions also made operating the gadget near impossible. Nevertheless, one tester who was able to taste the chocolate-y banana results declared, “It’s pretty brilliant.”

A Japanese frozen beer slushie maker creates a frothy drink out of your pale ale, but most weren’t looking for more foam in their brew.

“Japan has brought us many great inventions — Tamagotchi, Pokemon. This unfortunately is not one of their best innovations.”
