Irish Old Fashioned Recipe

You’ve gotta trust an Irishman’s advice about what to drink on St. Patrick’s Day, so when Jack McGarry — co-founder of New York watering hole Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog, Belfast-born barkeep, and cocktail historian — suggests an Irish twist on an American classic, it’s worth paying attention.

Watch above to see McGarry concoct his twist on a classic American cocktail, the Irish Old Fashioned. Bénédictine, an herbal liqueur, adds “a lot of herbaceousness,” notes McGarry, who calls this “one of my favorite drinks.” A good splash of Irish whiskey and equal parts orange and angostura bitters lend heft and lightness, respectively, and the result is a concoction McGarry deems “silky and velvety.”

Could be a mighty nice change of pace from all those Guinness pints and Jameson shots you tip back this St. Patty’s.
