Cake of the Day: Black and White Chocolate Cake

This lovely confection hails from the Slovakia-based baking blog The Story of a Cake. Self-taught baker Marta Marčáková is the mastermind behind the year-old blog which catalogs her rustic tarts, healthy sweets, and beautiful cakes. She was inspired to start it a year ago as a creative outlet from her sometimes mundane work as a lawyer in Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital.

Her black and white chocolate cake is today’s Cake of the Day.

“This cake reached the top in my list of desserts … really!” she writes. “It was a consequence of my desire for some chocolate, but also the result had to be some esthetic summer cake.”

To create this tall and decadent dessert, she bakes four layers of rich chocolate cake. Marčáková then prepares two kinds of mascarpone frosting — one made with melted, white chocolate and the other with cocoa for a darker chocolatey color. She layers each tier of cake with the white chocolate icing. On the exterior she creates a two-toned effect by frosting both white and dark frostings. Finally, a beautiful wreath of gooseberries and fresh flowers simply makes this black and white cake pop.
