13 Foods You Shouldn’t Be Eating

You would assume that food you buy at your grocery store is safe to eat, right? According to a new video from Delish, based on research by the Environmental Working Group, that’s not already the case.

You might have already heard some these warnings: steer clear of “processed foods with more than two ingredients that you can’t identify,” margarine packed with trans fats, and “sugar-free candy” that’s actually filled with artificial sweeteners.

Other tips, however, are not so rule-of-thumb and are a little more surprising. For example, some corn tortillas and muffins are made with propylparaben, which acts as a preserving agent. Research shows that it mimics estrogen and therefore can disrupt the body’s endocrine system, which is responsible for producing hormones. Microwavable popcorn is also a threat because its bags are often lined with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, which affect kidney functions and can increase your risk of diabetes or cancer.

Registered dietitians told Delish that eating these foods might not get you sick on the spot, but they’re still worth evading for your long-term health. Watch the video to see the whole list of secretly dangerous foods.
