Sheetz drops price on flex fuel, offering gas for $1.85 per gallon for limited time

Sheetz, a major mid-Atlantic gas station, restaurant and convenience chain, has lowered its price for flexible fuel to $1.85 a gallon through April 30.

E85, or flexible fuel, is offered at more than 375 Sheetz stores throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina, according to Harry Hammel, a company spokesperson

The discount is now available at all Sheetz locations that sell E85.

E85 is a gasoline-ethanol blend containing between 51% and 83% ethanol, depending on the geography and season, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. American drivers usually fill their tanks with E10 gas, fuel with a 10% mix of ethanol.

As of 2021, there were more than 27 million flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) in the U.S., the Department of Energy says. Because FFVs are capable of operating on gasoline and gasoline-ethanol blends, many vehicle owners don't realize their car is an FFV and that they have a choice of fuels to use.

Pearson Fuels has an online tool to determine if your vehicle is approved for flex fuel.

Rising gas prices across the US

The reduction comes on the heels of gas prices rising for many drivers in North America.

The national average price for a gallon E85 gas on Tuesday was $3.074, up from one day earlier when it cost $3.065 a gallon and from a week ago when it was $2.984, according to AAA.

Last month the flex fuel averaged $2.814 per gallon.

Meanwhile, the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas is up nearly 23 cents from just one month ago, according to AAA. The average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.676 on Tuesday.

Here's how those prices per gallon compares with recent dates:

  • One day earlier: $3.673

  • One week earlier: $3.608

  • One month earlier: $3.449
