Afternoon teas, hampers and breakfast deliveries for Mother's Day 2021

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and the 14th of March must have something to distinguish it from the other days of lockdown. What better way to celebrate than by treating your mother to one of London’s most decadent afternoon teas in the comfort of her home?

Fortnum & Mason The Mother's Day Hamper

One of the best things about Fortnum and Mason’s hampers are the wicker baskets they come in: each one is hand-woven using crafting designs dating back to the 1700s, and they look beautiful around the house. So even after all the tea and biscuits have been consumed, there’s something to remember the giftee by.

The Mother’s Day Hamper is stuffed with a wide selection of goodies and, as someone with a penchant for a good brew and an unfaltering sweet tooth, this is my kryptonite (in a good way). Everything seems to come in pairs. There’s two tins of tea, including a Mother’s Day one which tastes like an Earl Grey with hints of rose.

There are two boxes of chocolate, including Fortnum's popular Sea Salted Caramel Truffle Drum. And, two biscuit tins, including one of my favourites, Fortnum’s Chocolate Pearl biscuit, soft and buttery with Valrhona chocolate chunks. There’s enough in here to last anyone several afternoon teas with friends. I’d also bring along some mini sandwiches too - something savoury to complement it all. PA

£100, Fortnum & Mason

Cakes & Bubbles’ Champagne Afternoon In

The Cakes and Bubbles Afternoon Tea - Tristan Seward
The Cakes and Bubbles Afternoon Tea - Tristan Seward

Albert Adrià is the younger brother of Ferran and was formerly head pastry chef at the legendary el Bulli restaurant; his imaginative flair was the main reason for el Bulli’s astonishing success. The Cakes & Bubbles afternoon tea, delivered by the Hotel Cafe Royal in Piccadilly, is his brainchild and an absolute showstopper for the adventurous gourmet mum.

Part of the thrill of the experience is that nothing - apart from the bottle of champagne that accompanies the pastries - is as it seems. So while your eyes think they’re looking at a cork freshly pulled out of a bottle, what you’re tasting is a little chocolate log rolled in a very light sponge.

The delivery is in two chic pale yellow paper bags, and each cake is packaged so as to preserve its pristine appearance. There are two little golden egg shells that look soft-boiled, but dip in and you’ll find a passionfruit flan inside instead of a yolk. There’s a marshmallow with a minty chocolate coating to create the After Eight of dreams. And the showstopper is what looks like a small brie - complete with a washed rind - which turns out to be a cheesecake with sweet hazelnut ganache.

If your mother’s idea of the perfect cake is a Mr Kipling Mini Battenburg, she won’t thank you for this, but for adventurous pudding lovers, it’s a sure-fire hit. SS

The Champagne Afternoon In costs £100 for 2 people. Collection or delivery to within an eight-mile radius from Hotel Cafe Royal; Cakes & Bubbles

Firmdale Hotels’ Mothering Sunday Afternoon Tea at Home

Firmdale Hotels' Afternoon Tea
Firmdale Hotels' Afternoon Tea

If there were ever a way to bring a splash of colour and a dollop of luxury hotel elegance into somebody’s life, this is it: a Mothering Sunday delivery that’s equal parts style and sweetness. Kit Kemp is the interiors genius behind Firmdale Hotels, and aesthetically pleasing touches abound in this generous tea. For a start, it arrives in smart boutique-style bags, printed with jazzy textiles - none of your takeaway packaging here - and includes a signature Wheatgrass Bay scented candle by Rikrak to set the tone.

Then comes the three-course feast itself, also very neatly boxed up, and a set of menus and instructions that firmly guide your toward making An Occasion of it - platters are called for, as is a cake stand and various sharing platters. Tomato arancini (warmed up, please), olive and ricotta palmier and perfect finger sandwiches are the more-than-substantial savouries. Scones, both plain and fruit, are next, served with clotted cream and jams - but leave room for the patisserie, which is as delicate as it is toothsome.

We particularly liked the light puffs of choux filled with peach cream, and the miniature chocolate-and-lime tarts. Add to this picture-perfect spread either Wedgewood teas, or a bottle of Rathfinny Rose (or both), and you have a pretty, delicious celebration that’ll last long after teatime. SR

Firmdale Hotels Afternoon Tea at Home for Mothering Sunday costs £45 for 1, £75 for 2, £135 for 4 or £180 with Rathfinny Rose. Delivery is available to most London postcodes; firmdalehotels.com

Le Deli Robuchon’s Teatime for Two

Delivered in a huge designer-boutique-esque bag containing a series of slick monochrome boxes, Le Deli Robuchon’s Teatime for Two, launched in time for Mother’s Day, has to be one of the most stylish afternoon tea deliveries around. Top marks for presentation, and the contents didn’t disappoint.

Neatly trimmed sandwiches lined up in two uniform rows, with one set for the pescetarian and another for the meat-eater (a vegetarian afternoon tea is also available). Made using ingredients from the Piccadilly deli, they included classics - cucumber and cream cheese, roast beef and horseradish, ham and emmental - along with more unusual options such as aubergine, burrata and olive tapenade, and smoked salmon, egg and wasabi mayo. Twelve sandwiches in total meant there was enough leftover for the following day.

Two more boxes contained pretty-as-a-picture miniature French pastries (fruit tarts, vanilla mille feuilles and cute-as-a-button chocolate eclairs), and viennoiseries baked on-site at the deli, with plain and raisin scones accompanied by fluffy brioche sucres and melt-in-your-mouth madeleines. A final box hid the requisite raspberry jam, clotted cream and sachets of Joel Robuchon tea (Earl Grey and Moroccan mint infusion).

It would have been nice to have a wider choice of teas, and if I’m being finickity the scones might have been bigger and crumblier - all the better for slathering with jam - but in a time when so many deliveries are let down by meagre portions sizes or dried-out ingredients, the team at Le Deli Robuchon have done their legendary namesake proud. SRG

Teatime for Two costs £45 (£37 if collected from the deli), or £94.59 including a bottle of champagne Laurent Perrier brut. Pre-order with 24 hours notice, delivery available within four miles of Le Deli Robuchon; robuchonlondon.co.uk

The Chesterfield Hotel’s Original Sweetshop Afternoon Tea

The Chesterfield Mayfair's Afternoon Tea
The Chesterfield Mayfair's Afternoon Tea

This Mayfair hotel is well known for its themed afternoon teas and a long standing favourite for families with young ones is The Original Sweetshop Afternoon Tea. As I know anything with the word ‘sweetshop’ in it will still set my ten-year-old Eva’s heart a flutter, I thought it would be fun to try the home-delivered version as a mother-daughter treat.

The Chesterfield has a great system worked out for their afternoon teas at home – I confess, this isn’t my first – its centrepiece is a four-tiered cardboard cake stand protected while in transit by a lampshade-shaped cover, which you lift off once you’re ready to enjoy it.

On the top layer are two little pots of loose-leaf tea and sachets so you can make your own bags – a good old fashioned Earl Grey for me and a more child-friendly fruity one called Hibiscus Bora Bora. Below that, the cake action begins. Beautifully decorated in a ‘sweet’ theme, there are ‘coca cola’ slices, ‘drumstick’ macaroons, raspberry cheesecake ‘liquorice allsorts’, and my favourite – an absurdly delicious, ‘Reece’s peanut butter cup’ in a crunchy chocolate cube shell. Added into the mix are delicious fruit and chocolate chip scones with accompanying little pots of clotted cream and strawberry jam.

In another small box comes a generous selection of finger sandwiches, with fillings such as honey and roast ham with cheddar cheese and tomato chutney and Scottish smoked salmon with horseradish cream cheese, plus more obviously child-friendly options like cheese and jam (not together). Overall it was lovely although I couldn’t help thinking the most fun looking cakes suited a more grownup palette.

When you have this particular afternoon tea at the hotel, the kids get to choose a sort of pick-and-mix selection of sweets from a jar-laden trolley to take home with them. This obviously didn't come with our 'at home' version but after feeding back to them that the first thing Eva said when the tea arrived was ‘But where are the actual sweets?’, they have amended the future offering to include a little selection. You're welcome. FS

The Chesterfield Hotel's Original Sweetshop Afternoon Tea costs £40 per adult, £21.50 per child to self-collect, £7 extra to be delivered anywhere in London Zones 1-4. chesterfieldmayfair.com

The Berkeley Mother's Day Breakfast in Bed

The Berkeley Breakfast in Bed
The Berkeley Breakfast in Bed

If you’re looking for a lazy start to the day then The Berkeley’s Signature Breakfast In Bed delivered by bike might just be the one for you. Much like waking up in a hotel and ordering room service, there's quite a variety to choose from (maybe even enough for two days depending on your appetite), delivered along with the day’s paper.

To drink, I opted for the Valencia orange juice, although I could have chosen the Berkeley Boost juice (carrot, orange, fresh turmeric, apple and ginger). Then there were homemade plain and almond croissants with a side of organic raspberry jam and salted butter.

The pastries were smaller than average, meaning there was still room for a mix of fresh fruit, mainly pineapple, strawberries, melon, grapes and orange, and a bagel with Scottish smoked salmon, cream cheese and rocket. I saved the almond croissant for a mid-cycle snack later in the day, and the Greek yoghurt with Acacia honey, granola and a selection of berries for the next morning. The breakfast also included a chocolate heart with a hand-finished 'Happy Mother's Day' inscription. PA

Mother's Day Breakfast in Bed costs £29 per person, with an additional cost for a bottle of Laurent Perrier champagne and a bouquet of yellow tulips from McQueen Flowers . Delivery within an 8-mile radius of the hotel or collection (8-11am); the-berkeley.co.uk

Spring To Go's Afternoon Tea Gift Box

Spring to go
Spring to go

This is one for the metropolitan mothers out there: a neat, ribbon-tied package of generously proportioned scones, with the finest toppings and teas to accompany them. Spring restaurant in Somerset House is the creation of chef Skye Gyngell, and her delivery service is equally seasonal and refined, but not frilly at all. It focusses on produce from Gyngell’s project, Heckfield Home Farm, and the biodynamic farm Fern Verrow. The six scones are lovely and golden on the outside, and are coupled with three tall jars of rhubarb and vanilla jam, dark berry jam, and Jersey Cream (which mother will need to whip to stiffness herself). Two tins of high-quality loose-leaf tea are also included, a long leaf assam and a green tea, both from Postcard Teas. Add on a bottle of Wiston Estate fizz (£32), crystalised rose petals (£7) and a ravishing loose bouquet from Kitten Grayson (£70) to fill her home with rural refinement this Mothering Sunday. SR

Afternoon Tea Gift Box costs £60. Delivery within a 12km radius from Spring, Somerset House, Lancaster Place London WC2R 1LA; springrestaurant.co.uk
