Golden Globes 2021: proof that jewellery can turn a night in into a true red-carpet affair

This year’s Golden Globes virtual red carpet was proof of jewellery’s ability to turn another Sunday night playing dress-up in lockdown into the glamour-filled event we’ve all been craving. Throughout the last year we’ve seen our fair share of celebrities all dressed up with nowhere to go (anyone remember the ‘bin day challenge’?).

But almost 12 months on from the first round of lockdowns, celebrities and their stylists have fully embraced the opportunity to go big even when they’re at home, enlisting the services of full glam squads, professional photographers and - presumably - security guards.

At the first major event of awards ceremony season, winners and nominees paraded hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from their homes and on the socially distanced red carpet as they would on any other year. It brought a dazzling sense of escapism to proceedings.

Rather like Princess Beatrice in the Queen's diamond tiara for her socially distanced wedding last summer, the message was one of bejewelled defiance - and it was a mood that the world’s jewellery houses were only too willing to indulge. If anything, the jewellery on display was bigger and better than ever before.

Parures - that is, matching sets consisting of earrings, necklace, bracelets and/or rings - were commonplace.

Viola Davis paired her printed Lavie Byk dress with diamond-studded chain necklace, earrings and bracelet by Pomellato, while Anya Taylor Joy, who won a Best Actress award for her performance in A Queen's Gambit, wore a white diamond necklace and matching earrings by Tiffany & Co.

One of the celebrities who walked the actual red carpet, Salma Hayek channelled Old Hollywood glamour in an Alexander McQueen gown and Harry Winston jewels, including diamond chandelier earrings and bracelets, a diamond-studded secret watch worn as a brooch, and two rubellite and diamond cocktail rings.

Kaley Cuoco, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina and Kristen Wiig were also bejewelled by the American house, with Wiig wearing more than 76 carats of diamonds.

Also dripping in diamonds was award winner Andra Day, named best actress for The United States Vs. Billie Holiday, who wore diamond ear cuffs, wraparound bracelet and no fewer than five rings by Chanel Fine Jewellery. Host Tina Fey took the chance for a quick outfit change, switching her rose gold and diamond Pomellato necklace for an antique old diamond fringe necklace from the 1880s matched with diamond drop earrings by Fred Leighton.

Best Actress nominee Elle Fanning also wore Fred Leighton: a stunning pair of tasselled diamond drop earrings that complemented the bejewelled detail on her Gucci gown.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried’s Forevermark diamond earrings and choker were worth a cool $1 million - the actress also added a pink gold and diamond 101 Feuille secret watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre - while nominee for Best Director Regina King wore almost 50 carats of Forevermark diamonds in total, valued at around $2 million.

Best Actress nominee Kate Hudson wore more than 50 carats of Bulgari diamonds, including two diamond Serpenti earrings in one ear, and Isla Fisher finished her hot-pink gown with a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond necklace and earrings.

Among those to adopt a more contemporary take on red-carpet bling were Maya Rudolph, who accessorised with a single diamond ear cuff by Ana Khouri, and Cynthia Erivo, in her diamond Wempe earrings and nose ring.

There was a welcome dash of colour amongst all the diamonds. Cynthia Nixon wore chrysoprase, ruby and diamond earrings by Indian jeweller Hanut Singh together with a ruby and diamond vintage Cartier ring, both from Fred Leighton, Angela Basset wore vibrant sapphires and indicolites by Graziela Gems, while Best Actress award winner Emma Corrin wore Cartier emerald and diamond high jewellery earrings and a matching ring.

Vanessa Kirby and Carey Mulligan, who were both nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, also dazzled in Cartier - the former in red and white diamonds and rubies, the latter in a single Reflection de Cartier ear climber and a stonking high jewellery diamond ring as she Zoomed in from a London hotel.

The house also bejewelled Emily In Paris star Lily Collins, who matched her paisley-print dress with yellow-gold earrings, rings and a Cactus de Cartier bracelet.

The award for the best jewellery of the night goes to Ozark's Julia Garner, whose matching Verdura cuffs are the type of thing that sends jewellery nerds and editors weak at the knees.

Based on a design created by the fabulous Duke Fulco di Verdura for Gabrielle Chanel in the 1930s (she wanted him to reset a Maltese cross given to her by her lover the Russian Grand Duke Dmitri), the cuffs are bold, original and an unmistakeable symbol of great taste: exactly what’s required on any red carpet, virtual or otherwise.
