Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman's Relationship Timeline: A Look Back

Zoë Kravitz shocked fans when she casually mentioned she was engaged to fellow actor Karl Glusman in an October 2018 Rolling Stone interview — and that the proposal occurred eight months prior. The two wed the following June at a Paris mansion owned by Kravitz's father, rock star Lenny Kravitz.

However, 18 months after their wedding, Kravitz filed for divorce, which was finalized in August 2021.

In February 2022, the actress told ELLE that Glusman is "an incredible human being" and that their divorce was "more about me learning how to ask myself questions about who I am and still learning who I am, and that being okay. That's the journey I'm on right now."

2016: Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman meet

The couple were first introduced through a mutual friend at a bar in 2016. For the July 2019 issue of British Vogue, the actress opened up about the night she met Glusman. "I love that it wasn't on an app and that it wasn't on a movie set," she said. "My friend knew that I wanted to meet someone — not even to get serious, I think just to get laid, to be completely honest with you — and he brought Karl. I instantly felt something — then he turned around and started talking to the blonde girl next to him and I was like, 'Wait, what?' But he later told me that he was just nervous."

October 2016: Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman go public with their romance

Kravitz and Glusman made their relationship public in October 2016 when they enjoyed a date at a Kings of Leon concert in New York City.

The following evening, they were seen holding hands after grabbing dinner with Taylor Swift, Cara Delevingne, Dakota Johnson and other A-list pals at The Fat Radish restaurant.

The actress made her Instagram debut on Glusman's page just weeks later. (Glusman has since deleted all photos of him and Kravitz on his Instagram account.)

The couple celebrated their one-year dating anniversary publicly at the Emmy Awards in 2017. On Instagram, Kravitz called Glusman the "best date ever" and added, "I'm crazy about you kid."

February 2018: Karl Glusman privately proposes to Zoë Kravitz

Glusman proposed to Kravitz in February 2018, less than two years after meeting. However, the couple did not share their engagement news with the public until October.

October 2018: Zoë Kravitz reveals that she is engaged to Karl Glusman

In October 2018, Kravitz revealed the engagement news in a Rolling Stone cover story.

"Oh yeah, I'm engaged," the Big Little Lies star confirmed after the reporter spotted her ring, adding that he proposed in February of that year. "I haven't told anyone yet — I mean, I haven't told the world. I wanted to keep it private."

"I was in sweatpants," she recalled to Rolling Stone. "I think I was a little drunk. I could feel his heart beating so fast — I was like, 'Baby, are you okay?' I was actually worried about him! I love that it wasn't this elaborate plan in Paris. It was at home, in sweatpants."

Before confirming her engagement, Kravitz subtly wore her diamond engagement ring without fans knowing for eight months. In fact, she flashed her sparkler on the 2018 Met Gala red carpet in May.

The engagement ring was curated by The One I Love, an antique and modern jewelry store in N.Y.C., and the owner, Mia Moross, worked with Kravitz and Glusman to create the perfect ring.

The actress chose an "extremely rare" vintage ring that is unique thanks to the size of the diamonds and its pristine nature. The store described the piece as an "18th Century diamond half-loop" that features a row of collet-set rose-cut diamonds in a closed back setting of silver-topped gold, which allows for the stones to emit a rich smoky hue."

June 29, 2019: Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman get married

On June 29, 2019, Kravitz and Glusman wed at a three-story, eight-bedroom, 18th-century Paris mansion owned by her father.

Guests included Kravitz's dad and mom Lisa Bonet, as well as Bonet's then-husband, Aquaman star Jason Momoa.

Kravitz's Big Little Lies costars Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Reese Witherspoon were also in attendance as well as Glusman's Nocturnal Animals costar Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

The bride wore custom white bike shorts, a matching white bandeau, and a beaded net dress by Danielle Frankel for the rehearsal dinner, and an Audrey Hepburn-inspired gown by Alexander Wang for the wedding.

July 29, 2019: Karl Glusman celebrates his one-month wedding anniversary with Zoë Kravitz

Glusman celebrated their one-month wedding anniversary with an Instagram post. "I believe our stars were written before we met, 'Karl + Zoë, ride or die into the sunset…' " he wrote. Days prior to Glusman's post, Kravitz shared a professional photo of the actor's headshot with the simple caption, "husband."

May 4, 2020: Zoë Kravitz says Karl Glusman is "one of the kindest people I've ever met"

In May 2020, Kravitz had nothing but sweet things to say about Glusman almost one year into their marriage.

The High Fidelity star appeared on Dax Shepard's podcast Armchair Expert and called Glusman "the one" when Shepard asked how she knew that she would get married.

"I feel I've known him my entire life," Kravitz told the host. "He's just one of the kindest people I've ever met. He's one of the most honest people I've ever met and I feel like I've known him since I was a kid, even though I haven't. There's this connection where it's like we've always known each other, we've always lived together. It doesn't feel like this foreign thing. We have a history, it feels like. You know how sometimes you have a weird part of your personality only your friends know from when you were young? We have that same part of our personalities if that makes sense."

June 2020: Zoë Kravitz says marriage to Karl Glusman has helped her make "less bad choices"

Kravitz spoke about her marriage to Glusman in a June 2020 interview with Variety.

"I'm married, and [making] less bad choices — I would like to think," she said. "You know, life is an ongoing struggle, so of course, there's always work to be done. But there's that first step where it's like, I'm an adult."

On the couple's one-year wedding anniversary, Kravitz posted a black-and-white photograph from their wedding on Instagram with the simple caption, "One year." Glusman made a similar post with the caption, "One year. *🌀‼️❔*🌀❕Not the year we expected... but I feel like if we can make it through this, we can take on anything. I love you. More than anything."

December 23, 2020: Zoë Kravitz files for divorce from Karl Glusman

18 months after their wedding, Kravitz filed divorce papers to end her marriage to Glusman, as seen in court records obtained by PEOPLE.

A rep for the actress confirmed the news exclusively to PEOPLE at the time.

August 22, 2021: Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman's divorce is finalized

Eight months later, a New York judge signed off on the divorce between Kravitz and Glusman in August 2021.

The following month, Kravitz told Another magazine that "separations, breakups are sad, but are beautiful things, too. It's about the bittersweetness, that beginning and that end. It's so complex, that space, when you're in between heartbroken and mourning the loss of something and excited for what's ahead of you."

February 2022: Zoë Kravitz opens up about her divorce from Karl Glusman

Kravitz appeared on the cover of ELLE's March 2022 issue and spoke about the end of her marriage to Glusman, calling her ex-husband an "incredible human being."

"It really is less about him and more about me learning how to ask myself questions about who I am and still learning who I am, and that being okay," she shared. "That's the journey I'm on right now."

The Batman actress also said she feels "optimistic about life." She added, "All my relationships in life — my friendships, my romantic relationships, my family — the journey is learning how to show up honestly. Sometimes we can't show up, and that's okay as long as we know how to communicate that we love those people."
