The year’s undisputed red-carpet queen, Zendaya, continues to serve look after look on the press tour for her new tennis drama, Challengers, and each outfit has perfectly combined preppy athleticism with classic femininity. It’s called commitment to the theme!
The Vogue cover girl’s outfits have been beyond literal during this press tour, with tennis balls on her shoes and other fun details (think a feathery tail) making the most of every promotional opportunity.
Here’s everything she’s worn so far.
Law Roach’s Instagram, April 26: custom Celia Kritharioti
On April 26, Zendaya’s longtime creative partner and stylist Law Roach showed off the custom Challengers poster dress by designer Celia Kritharioti. Yes, the long-sleeve sequined dress features the iconic image of Zendaya’s character Tashi looking at her boys Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and Art (Mike Faist) through a pair of pink sunglasses as they wade in a pool. What better way to mark the film’s release date than wearing your own face?
“[Challengers movie] but make it FASHION,” Roach captioned his post, which also featured a look at the deconstructed dress pattern. “Tashi Made Her Wear It.”
You probably recognize Kritharioti as the same designer who created Zendaya’s plunging green tennis ball gown for the LA premiere after-party. More on that in a minute.
New York City, April 24: vintage dress and Gianvito Rossi heels
Z ended another long press day at Zero Bond wearing a vintage chiffon dress and cropped jacket set from the 1930s. “Thank you @luxurylaw for seeing the beauty in this piece,” Sweet Disorder Vintage captioned an image of Zendaya wearing the sheer look. “It is a 1930s dress set found in an old trunk that I hand-dyed the perfect shade of green.”
New York City, April 24: custom On jumpsuit
The high-slit trousers on this jumpsuit remind me of tear-away sweatpants, but in the most chic way. And topping off the look with a pair of white sneakers? Consider this another sporty W.
New York City, April 24: custom Alaïa and Bulgari jewelry
A little bit sporty, a lot glam.
New York City, April 24: Longchamp and Bulgari jewelry
Calling it now: Tenniscore is about to be everywhere this summer.
Arriving at Live With Kelly and Mark, April 23: Vintage Thierry Mugler
Neon green isn’t for everyone. It is, however, for Zendaya.
Arriving at Good Morning America, April 23: custom Erdem and Bulgari jewelry
Zendaya and stylist Law Roach modified this off-the-runway Erdem dress by cropping it at the knee and exposing the tulle.
Arriving in New York City, April 22: custom T-shirt by Jonathan Anderson
There’s more to this look than meets the eye. “I TOLD YA” is actually a reference to a T-shirt worn by John F. Kennedy Jr., which itself was likely a reference to one of his father’s campaign slogans. When creating costumes for the film, designer Jonathan Anderson referenced JFK Jr.’s laidback, quiet-luxury style as inspiration. Zendaya’s character Tashi even wears the same tee in the film.
Los Angeles photo call, April 20: custom Jacquemus
Barbiecore meets tenniscore in this custom Jacquemus look. For this look, Roach even added some coquette like Z's baby pink pumps and satin headband featuring a sweet pink bow.
Jimmy Kimmel Live, April 18: Ralph Lauren spring-summer 1992
Our polished preppy queen!
Los Angeles premiere after-party, April 16: custom Celia Krithariot
This marks the second time Zendaya has worn a tennis ball somewhere on her look. On anyone else it would look gimmicky. Not here, though!
Los Angeles premiere, April 16: custom Vera Wang
The deconstructed bodice with a messy-on-purpose bun? Perfection.
Milan photo call, April 14: Ralph Lauren fall-winter 1992
This minidress was originally modeled on the runway by Cindy Crawford.
Che Tempo Che Fa appearance in Milan, April 14: custom 16Arlington
Haven’t you heard? The LWD is the new LBD.
Monte-Carlo photo call, April 13: Brunello Cucinelli fall/winter 2024
If the concept of “preppy” was a person, it would look like this:
Photo call, London, April 11: Vivenne Westwood spring-summer 1994 and Bulgari jewelry
How! Freaking! Cute! This vintage Vivienne Westwood look is exactly what I want to be wearing all summer long.
What’s that? The feathery tail isn’t practical? Who cares! I’d never sit down while wearing a look like this; I’d simply be too busy posing on a roof somewhere in London like our girl Z.
UK premiere, April 10: Custom Thom Browne and Bulgari jewelry
The star wore her currently honey-blonde hair in a high ponytail that was then braided, bringing to mind the equally fierce and formidable Katniss Everdeen. But while a middle school horse girl would have tied a ribbon at the tip of the braid, Zendaya’s white ribbon bow is artfully tied around the base, framing the star’s face and giving her a low-key kind of white tiara.
Crossed racquets cover this white sequined gown with a preppy collar, tennis-skirt pleats, and athletic mesh detailing.
Photo call, Rome, April 8: Custom Loewe dress and shoes
We thought tennis shoes were sneakers, but no, these are tennis shoes.
Rome premiere, April 8: Custom Calvin Klein skirt suit, Bulgari jewels, Louis Vuitton shoes
The serve that skipped the shirt.
Paris premiere, April 6: Custom Louis Vuitton and Bulgari jewelry
Did someone say “tennis whites”?
Photo call, Paris, April 6: Louis Vuitton spring-summer 2013 ready-to-wear
Green like the ball with a chessboard, hinting at the mind games to come.
Photo call, Paris, April 6: vintage Louis Vuitton
Law Roach reportedly pulled this archival look from a vintage shop in Paris.
Photo call, Sydney, March 27: custom LaCoste
An actual tennis-wear brand! See it here.
Press event, Sydney, March 27: K-Way
Press event, Sydney, March 26: Elisabetta Franchi
Australian premiere, March 26: custom Loewe
Did you know this movie is about tennis?
Women’s singles finals of BNP Paribas tournament, Indian Wells, California, March 17: Louis Vuitton skirt and jacket, Urban Outfitters tank top
The jacket and skirt are actually from separate collections, and the slight differences keep it from looking like a costume. (She’s pictured here with the women’s world number one, Iga Swiatek.)
