Zeal & Ardor have unveiled the new song “to my ilk,” the first single from the avant-metal band’s upcoming album, GREIF, set for release on August 23rd.
Coming in at a brief two-and-a-half minutes, “to my ilk” is a mellow tune by Zeal & Ardor standards. The melodic track never gets into heavy territory, as singer-guitarist Manuel Gagneux delivers a reserved vocal performance throughout.
Overall, GREIF has 14 tracks, with “to my ilk” serving as the closing song. Regarding the track, “Gagneux states, “It has another level of emotion, and it came out just the way I imagined.”
GREIF will mark Zeal & Ardor’s fourth album overall, and the follow-up to 2022’s self-titled effort. Since forming roughly a decade ago, the band has earned critical acclaim with its unique blend of extreme metal with traditional slave spirituals.
According to a press release, “The title, GREIF, is inspired by an annual tradition in Gagneux’s hometown of Basel, Switzerland. A mythical hybrid creature parades through the streets for the children in symbolism of Basel’s working people balking at the oppressive elite on its other side.”
Gagnuex added, “The GREIF is a lion, a snake, and a bird. During the parade, he turns his backside to the aristocrats and sticks it to the man. It reflects where we are.”
As of now, Zeal & Ardor have a run of European shows set for June, followed by more European dates in August, September, and October.
