Alice in Chains played a headlining concert on Thursday (October 5th) in Highland, California, and the grunge icons were joined by a special guest: guitar legend Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne, and the current Pantera lineup.

Wylde took the stage for “Would?” — the closing masterpiece on Dirt and the final song of Alice in Chains’ main set, prior to the encore.

“To be onstage and see Zakk Wylde walk out with my Les Paul, that’s just an honor right there,” said AIC singer-guitarist William DuVall during Wylde’s introduction. “The man’s a genre unto himself.”

Wylde falls right in with Jerry Cantrell and the rest of the band, tactfully complementing the rhythm section rather than trying to get to showy. But during the chorus, he displays his masterful right-hand pick work, adding some tasteful syncopations and additional chunk to the mix.

Wylde’s appearance isn’t too surprising. He has a residence just under an hour from Highland, and Pantera were initially set to play the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento this past weekend before dropping off the bill in late September. He’s also a longtime fan and colleague of Cantrell and Alice in Chains.

“The first time I heard Jerry Cantrell and the boys was ‘Man in the Box,'” Wylde told ArtistDirect.com in 2013. “Then, there was ‘Sea of Sorrow.’ I was like, ‘Dude, this stuff’s awesome!’ They played Long Beach Arena in 1989 on some metal thing with Lynch Mob. I saw them there on Facelift, and it was way cool.”

He continued: “All of their records are cool. They’re like Led Zeppelin records because they’re all different. I remember the first time Jerry played me Dirt in the back of the tour bus. They were out with us on an Ozzy Osbourne tour. I was like, ‘Dude, this is fucking ridiculous!’ To me, that’s their Led Zeppelin IV, Back in Black, or ‘The Black Album.’ For every band, the stars align on that record, and they’re primed and geared for that next jump. From beginning to the end, everything about that record is incredible.”

Alice in Chains are still supporting select dates on the US leg of Guns N’ Roses’ ongoing 2023 tour, with two dates remaining: Wednesday (October 11th) in Phoenix and October 16th in Vancouver. Alice are also filling the gaps with their own headlining dates, like the Highland show. The band next plays on Tuesday (October 10th) in Las Vegas, and you can get tickets via StubHub.

Meanwhile, Wylde will play two more November dates with Pantera before embarking on a trek with his Black Sabbath tribute act Zakk Sabbath. The outing launches December 5th in Sacramento and runs through January 20th in Los Angeles. Get tickets here.
