Zachary Quinto's Touching Thoughts on Leonard Nimoy

On Feb. 27, 2015, celebrated actor Leonard Nimoy passed away in his Los Angeles home at the age of 83. When Zachary Quinto took over the role of Spock in Star Trek, he got to know Nimoy quite well. On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Quinto reflected on the legend who became his friend. “We actually lost Leonard a year ago on the 27th of this month, so much love to him and his family, of course,” he said to Colbert. “I’ve never met somebody, actually, who so fully embodied a sense of fulfillment in their life. I really haven’t.”

Nimoy’s life went beyond Star Trek. He was a writer, director, photographer, and a generous patron of Los Angeles arts. He sponsored a $50,000 annual fellowship to local artists and donated $100,000 to L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art and $1 million to the Griffith Observatory. “He was such a tremendous artist, philanthropist, and generous person, and so intelligent,” said Quinto. “And I miss him all the time; I really miss him so much at this point, obviously, marking the anniversary of his passing. He was one of the greatest gifts that my career has brought into my personal life.”

It was not only Leonard whom Quinto became close with — he told Colbert he still keeps in touch with Susan Bay Nimoy, Leonard’s widow: “His wife was at the opening night of our play. I’m doing a play downtown, and she came from L.A. to be there with us, and, you know, she’s as much a part of my life as he was. So I feel really lucky to have known them on so many levels, for sure.”

In lighter fare, Stephen Colbert had a supremely awkward interview with Casey Affleck.
