'High School Musical' sweetheart Zac Efron nearly passed away after being rushed to the hospital in Australia for a deathly bacterial infection. Fortunately, according to PopCulture, he is back in the United States and in stable condition.

Efron was admitted to the St. Andrews War Memorial Hospital in Spring Hill where he had to undergo emergency surgery. His condition was described as a "form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection." He spent several days in the hospital after the surgery recovering.

Efron was reportedly rushed to the Brisbane Airport from Papua New Guinea where he was filming his new reality TV show 'Killing Zac Efron.' On the show, Efron will spend three weeks in the wilderness with nothing but bare essentials as he makes his way through a remote and dangerous island. It is likely that Efron took the title of his show a bit too literally and almost died from his ambitious expedition despite his optimistic attitude towards working on the project.

"I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level," Efron said during a press release according to THR. "I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits."

Before embarking on his wilderness journey, Efron had a "pretty boy" reputation starring in many Disney and rom-com films like 'High School Musical' and 'Baywatch.' He only recently broke from that mold playing Ted Bundy in 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.'

Fans quickly took to Twitter to express their concerns.

"@ZacEfron ARE YOU OKAY???? I just read a piece about you being rushed to hospital before Christmas PLEASE BE OKAY PLEASE," one fan urged.

"First thing I see from daily mail is that zac Efron almost died from disease from some visit somewhere and I’m sick and sad now :/(," [another wrote.] (https://twitter.com/lifeofadanna/status/1211305468024500224)

"Zac Efron almost died and I’m balling my eyes out," one fan added.

Other fans are relieved to see that Efron is feeling better.

"Zac Efron is fine," another fan wrote. "He was stable when he was rushed in, then he recieved medical treatment for several days and is now in the all clear and was sent back home to the U.S on christmas eve."

"how scary and unexpected..it really is all over the internet I just looked, but obviously he's alive and ok cos we just saw pictures if him at the shops in L.A so no stress Thank God he's ok," another tweeted.
