Type O Negative’s seminal album Bloody Kisses turned 30 this year, and Z2 Comics is celebrating the occasion with a graphic novel and picture-disc vinyl reissue.
The graphic novel will feature 12 stories based on songs from what is widely considered the ultimate gothic metal album. The book includes art and stories from contributors Andy Biersack (Black Veil Brides), Carla Harvey (Butcher Babies), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil), and Burton C. Bell (Fear Factory), and more. A release is set for spring 2024.
“Type O Negative is one of those rare bands that created a musical genre by their very existence, and Bloody Kisses is one of those unexpected glorious releases that flipped the table of what was expected from hard rock and metal bands when it came out,” commented editor-in-chief Rantz Hoseley via a press release. “Thirty years later, there’s no band that can go head to head with what they accomplished with that album, and our focus has been celebrating and honoring that spirit in every one of these stories and art pieces.”
In addition, Z2 will also be releasing a double picture-disc vinyl reissue of Bloody Kisses (available in the deluxe “Green Edition” bundle with the graphic novel) featuring artwork by Life of Agony’s Alan Robert depicting a member of Type O on each side of the LPs.
“I have a long history with the Type O guys since we all grew up in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn,” Robert said via a press release. “Josh Silver produced Life of Agony’s initial demos in his home studio and our debut album River Runs Red at System’s Two – the same place Type O recorded Bloody Kisses. We did several tours together in the early ’90s and shared a ton of laughs, so it was truly an honor to be a part of bringing this book to life. I know their music inside and out.”
The standalone hardcover edition of the Bloody Kisses graphic novel retails for $40; a “Deluxe Edition” retails for $100 and includes the novel, a slipcase, four art prints, and a foil trading card illustrated by Anthrax’s Charlie Benante; and the super deluxe “Green Edition” (limited to 666) retails for $250 and includes the novel/slipcase, aforementioned art prints and Benante-illusgrated collector’s card, the double picture-disc vinyl, and more.
