The best source for Yu Darvish news this winter continues to be Yu Darvish himself.

The free agent right-hander was quick to shoot down reports of a deal with the Chicago Cubs in December, calling the report “fake news” in an amusing tweet. Now he’s putting on his reporter’s hat again, this time responding to reports that he’d narrowed the list of teams he was considering down to five with a tweet that piqued everyone’s interest.

Darvish’s tweet seemingly confirms that the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs are still in the mix. But the kicker here is that Darvish is also dangling the carrot of a mystery team.

After the initial report, we ranked the best landing spots for Darvish among the teams included in said report. In that, we noted that it was interesting but not surprising that the Dodgers were not among the reported teams given Darvish’s struggles for them in the postseason. Well, all things considered, they would probably still be the team that makes the most sense in this situation, especially considering the process they went through to get Darvish. Any other team emerging would be the true definition of a mystery team.

Given the lack of action or real drama since the Giancarlo Stanton and Shohei Ohtani moves went down in early December, we certainly welcome the possibility. The Hot Stove needs some sort of jolt to get us buzzing again. No disrespect to Jay Bruce, his signing with the Mets on Wednesday probably isn’t it.

Credit Yu Darvish, the reporter. For now anyway, he’s managed to get us on the edge of our seats while we wait to see where Yu Darvish, the pitcher, ends up.
