Young Thug’s RICO trial is finally underway and there have already been multiple head-scratching moments. The Atlanta rapper’s defense believes the prosecution is misusing evidence and his song lyrics against him.

Thugger’s attorney, Brian Steel, was keen on asserting that the Punk artist’s lyrics reflected the life he truly lived during the Tuesday (Nov. 28) court proceedings. He claimed that Thug was “born into a society filled with despair” and the violent crime in his music was “the stories he knew.” Even further, the prosecution selectively gleaned lyrics that matched the crimes he was accused of to illustrate his guilt.

Prosecutors claimed that the “Hot” rapper was the leader of a criminal street gang that moved like a “pack of wolves.” Steel countered and said that Thug wasn’t even familiar with most of the people involved in the indictment and had no reason to resort to criminal activity. “He’s not sitting there telling people to kill people,” Steel said. “He doesn’t need their money. Jeffery is worth tens of millions of dollars.”

Multiple moments from Young Thug’s trial have already gone viral on the internet. In one clip, his attorney explains that the “Thug” part of his artist name stands for “Truly Humbled Under God.” In another clip, he references Gunna’s 2022 hit “Pushin’ P” which featured Thugger and Future.

According to the attorney, “Pushin P” stands for “Pushing Positivity.” It was a major topic of conversation when the record first dropped, and now fans may finally have their answer to what it means. “It means, any circumstance you’re in, if you think positively about something, you can make it through,” he said. “You’re pushing positivity.”

Beyond Thug, attorneys for five other defendants shared their opening statements on Tuesday. On Wednesday (Nov. 29), the district attorney will present its case and call witnesses. That process could potentially take months to finish.
