Young Sheldon, CBS's prequel spinoff to the hit series The Big Bang Theory, is wrapping after seven seasons on the air.

According to a statement from the network, the show, which will premiere its seventh and final season on Thursday, Feb. 15, will sign off with a one-hour series finale on Thursday, May 16.

“Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience,” executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro and Chuck Lorre said in a joint statement. “We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”

In a separate statement, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said of the news: “As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice. It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start. We extend a sincere thank you to executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland and the entire writing and producing teams for six wonderful seasons. We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”

Young Sheldon follows Big Bang character Sheldon Cooper's life as a 9-year-old child prodigy living with his family and attending high school in Texas.

The series stars Iain Armitage in the titular role, and also features Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Annie Potts, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, and Jim Parsons, who portrayed Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory, as the voice of Sheldon.

Fans of the series batted about theories during the sixth season that the story would be coming to an end. In particular, fans raised eyebrows after Sheldon developed a program to catalog all university educational grants available, suggesting that his time to leave Texas — and move to Pasadena, Calif., where Big Bang takes place — would be imminent.
