Young Sheldon‘s days on CBS are numbered. As previously reported, TV’s most-watched comedy will conclude in Spring 2024.

The Big Bang Theory prequel first bowed in 2017, and tells the story of future Nobel Prize-winning physicist Sheldon Cooper as he comes of age in Medford, Texas, along with his twin sister Missy (Raegan Revord), older brother Georgie (Montana Jordan), parents Mary and George (Zoe Perry and Lance Barber) and his beloved Meemaw (Annie Potts). But all good things must come to an end — and Young Sheldon‘s farewell run is set to get underway in February.

“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice,” CBS entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in November. “It set itself apart with a remarkable cast that felt like a family from the first moment we saw them on screen and brought characters to life with unique heartfelt stories that drew audiences in from the start. We extend a sincere thank you to executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland and the entire writing and producing teams for six wonderful seasons. We look forward to seeing their final season unfold and giving it a proper send off with the best episodes yet for their fans to enjoy.”

How Did Young Sheldon Season 6 End?

In Young Sheldon‘s Season 6 finale, Sheldon and Mary’s flight to Germany took off just before a tornado touched down in Medford, forcing the rest of the Cooper/McAllister clan to hunker down and take cover.

The storm was alluded to in a Season 1 episode of Big Bang, when Sheldon told Penny about his stint in Heidelberg. At the time, he said that his mother flew back to Texas to help his dad after their house slipped off cinderblocks. “It was tornado season, and it was an aluminum house,” he explained. But clearly Sheldon’s memory was a bit fuzzy, because it wasn’t his childhood home that suffered the brunt of the damage.

Once it was safe to leave the laundromat, Meemaw discovered that her house had been decimated. George then extended an invite to his mother-in-law and Mandy to come stay with him and Missy — at least for the duration of Sheldon and Mary’s time abroad.

It was confirmed on Nov. 14 that Young Sheldon will end with Season 7. Therefore, it will not be renewed for Season 8.

“Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience,” executive producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and Steve Holland said in a statement at the time. “We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you.”

Will Sheldon’s Dad George Die in Young Sheldon Season 7?

Assuming Young Sheldon‘s narrative keeps at a steady pace, Sheldon will turn 14 in Season 7 — the age at which, per Big Bang’s previously established timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to begin his graduate studies at the California Institute of Technology.

That same year, family patriarch George meets his maker, setting up Young Sheldon for a bittersweet sendoff not unlike early ’90s classic The Wonder Years. But time will tell if the prequel remains true to canon, and whether George dies on screen. As executive producer Steve Holland previously warned TVLine, “just because [something happened on Big Bang] doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”

Recently, Barber posted a pair of potentially ominous Instagram posts — one captioned “gonna miss my Cooper kids” that featured a new, behind-the-scenes photo with Armitage, Revord and Jordan, and the other captioned “seems like yesterday…,” with a picture of Armitage and Revord circa Season 3.

As Young Sheldon Season 7 began production in November, a behind-the-scenes photo revealed that series regular Emily Osment (aka Mandy) was on hand to film the prequel’s new main title sequence — and TVLine can confirm that she’ll be featured when opening credits roll on Feb. 15.

In Young Sheldon Season 1, George bet his son $1,000 that he would be married before he turns 25. After accepting Dad’s bet, our narrator chimed in to say that “Georgie married his first wife at 19” — and in the Season 6 finale, Mandy proposed to an 18-year-old Georgie.

They may not get their Happily Ever After — per Big Bang lore, Georgie marries and divorces twice by 2019 — but their nuptials will likely take place in Young Sheldon Season 7.

Will there be a Young Sheldon spinoff?

CBS is looking to expand the Big Bang Theory universe once more — this time with a Young Sheldon spinoff centered on new parents Georgie and Mandy.

The prospective offshoot, which is nearing a direct-to-series order, would star Jordan as Sheldon’s older brother and Osment as his bride-to-be. But unlike Young Sheldon, which pivoted to a single-camera format, the Georgie and Mandy spinoff is being prepped as a multi-camera sitcom, shot in front of a live studio audience — just like Big Bang.

If all goes according to plan, a minimum of 13 episodes will air during the 2024-25 TV season.
