Youmacom, Run of the Dead and 'Great American Trailer Park': 5 things to do this weekend
The first weekend of November offers a diverse array of events in metro Detroit, including celebrations of culture, anime, holiday shopping a parade honoring military veterans.
Here are five things to do Nov. 3-5.
Youmacon
This annual celebration of Japanese animation, video games, popular culture and costuming will take place all weekend with interactive games and events, cosplay, celebrity guest panels, live musical performances, exhibitors, artists and more.
Highlights of this year's event will include large video game and table-top gaming rooms, a Charity Masquerade Ball, bands and a 150,000-square-foot dealer’s room for purchasing anime, art, figures and other collectibles.
Festivities will take place from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Sunday at the Huntington Place and the Detroit Marriott within the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. General admission ticket options are weekend pass ($70), Friday only ($40), Saturday only ($50) or Sunday only ($30) passes.
Run of the Dead
Participants will learn about the significance of the Mexican holiday to honor the dead at this fundraiser for the Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest, hosted by the Southwest Detroit Business Association.
There will also be an ofrenda that will be created and displayed by a local artist. The community is invited to bring family photos of their ancestors to add to the altar and wear traditional Día de Los Muertos face paint, flowers, and attire.
7 a.m.-noon Saturday at the George S. Patton Park Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere in Detroit. The 5K/10K run-walk will begin at 9 a.m., taking competitors through southwest Detroit’s historic Holy Cross and Woodmere cemeteries. Event day registration is $75 for both events.
All Things Detroit: Holiday Experience & Food Truck Rally
Start filling those gift lists and shop with more than 200 small local businesses offering handmade wares, original products, food and a chance to snap a photo with Santa.
There will also be food trucks, a local art gallery, photo booths, music and more.
Noon-5 p.m. Sunday at the Eastern Market, 2934 Russell Street in Detroit. General admission tickets are $5. Beat the Crowd tickets for $10 sold in advance online includes early entry and shopping from 10-noon.
Veterans Day Parade
The Armed Service Salute, a patriotic Veterans Day celebration will consist of the 18th Annual Detroit Veterans Day Parade that will include tanks, trucks, JROTC units, high school bands and Big Heads along with approximately 2,000 veterans and their families pay tribute to men and women who help keep our country safe.
Rich Luterman from Fox-2, a Gulf War veteran, will emcee a 9:45 a.m. ceremony to kick off the parade which will start at IBEW Local 58, 1358 Abbott Street in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood.

There will also be a 4Star, 4 Mile race that will allow veterans to run alongside parade participants.
Viewers are encouraged to go to Roosevelt Park near 16th Street and Michigan Avenue for a good view of the parade.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. and will progress down Trumbull Avenue and then along Michigan Avenue in Detroit.
The Great American Trailer Park Musical
Stagecrafters presents this offbeat, fun-loving musical that the New York Times called, “a heartfelt, humorous look at trailer park life.”
This production runs for 2 1/2 hours and is rated M for mature audiences.
Music and lyrics by David Nehls and book by Betsy Kelso.
The musical runs from Friday through Nov. 19 at the Baldwin Theatre, 415 South Lafayette in Royal Oak. Tickets are $25 Thursdays; and $35 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
