The New York Times has hired Axios politics reporter Jonathan Swan.

Swan starts at the Times, where he will cover Republicans in Congress, in January 2023. In the summer, he will move to the 2024 presidential election team.

“Today we are thrilled to tell you that Jonathan Swan, a gifted, dogged and high-impact reporter, will be joining The Times,” the Times announced Friday. “Jonathan, a national political reporter at Axios, is one of the biggest news breakers and best-sourced reporters in Washington.”

Swan led coverage of Donald Trump’s presidency, reporting Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the U.S. plan to depart the Paris Climate Agreement established in Paris in 2015, Steve Bannon’s firing and Paul Ryan’s retirement from Congress.

“Axios has been my home and family for six years,” Swan told Axios. “I will forever be grateful for Jim, Mike and Roy taking a chance on me and for all of my supportive colleagues.”

He joined Axios in 2016, coming from The Hill, before the company officially launched in 2017. There, he won an Emmy for his 2020 interview with the 45th president, in which his face became used for memes.

Born and raised in Sydney, Swan covered Australian politics before moving to the United States in 2014. At 29 years old, he won the Wallace Brown Young Achiever Award for Journalism, an esteemed Australian honor. He also received the 2022 White House Correspondents’ Association Aldo Beckman award for “overall excellence in White House coverage.”

Jonathan’s “Trump’s Last Stand” editorial series, which laid out the end of Trump’s time in office, rose to the top of the Apple Charts in its podcast form, garnering more than 10 million listeners.

“[W]hat makes Swan special is his heart and values,” Axios CEO Jim VandeHei wrote in a note to staff. “He personifies Axios: high-achieving but warm, gracious, generous and a blast to be around.”
