    New York Film Critics Circle Names ‘Irishman’ Best Film of 2019

    “The Irishman” has been named best film of 2019 by the New York Film Critics Circle. Martin Scorsese’s epic mob drama — starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino — also nabbed a supporting actor win for Joe Pesci.

    Best director went to Benny and Josh Safdie for “Uncut Gems,” while “I Lost My Body” won for animation. In acting categories, top prizes went to Antonio Banderas for “Pain and Glory,” Lupita Nyong’o for “Us.” Laura Dern was awarded best supporting actress for both “Marriage Story and “Little Women.”

    Last year, “Roma” was named best film with Alfonso Cuarón taking the top directing prize and best cinematography. Past prize winners have included “Lady Bird,” “La La Land,” “Carol,” “Boyhood” and “American Hustle.”

    The New York Film Critics Circle, founded by Wanda Hale of the New York Daily News, has been handing out superlatives since 1935. The 85th ceremony will be held Jan. 7 at the New York Film Critics’ annual gala.

    Best First Film: “Atlantics,” Mati Diop

    Best Actor: Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory”

    Best Actress: Lupita Nyong’o, “Us”

    Best Supporting Actor: Joe Pesci, “The Irishman”

    Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern for “Marriage Story” and “Little Women”

    Best Non-Fiction Film: “Honeyland”

    Best Screenplay: “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino

    Best Cinematography: “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” Claire Mathon

    Best Foreign Language Film: “Parasite”

    Best Animated Film: “I Lost My Body”

    Special Award: Randy Newman

    Special Award: Indie Collect
