New York City’s Double Chicken Please topped the list at the second annual North America’s 50 Best Bars Awards, which recognizes the top bars in the continent based on mixology, creativity and design.

Tucked away on a nondescript corner of Allen Street, Double Chicken Please was recognized for its “ingenious cocktail program,” which sees owners GN Chan and Faye Chen deconstructing traditional drinks and then reassembling them in creative new ways (see their signature cocktails inspired by everything from key lime pie and french toast to “cold pizza”). In a statement, 50 Best says “Double Chicken Please is truly pushing the boundaries of flavor in cocktails and doing so with staggering creativity and precision, not to mention a wonderful sense of humor, humility and always flawless hospitality.”

The AAPI-owned bar placed number 17 on the inaugural list of North America’s 50 Best Bars and then rose even higher on the World’s 50 Best Bars list, coming in at number 6.

“This remarkable achievement did not come overnight,” notes Mark Sansom, Content Director for 50 Best. “The duo persevered through the very challenging days of the pandemic, never once compromising their original vision for cocktails inspired by food dishes, even though their dream bar’s very viability was at risk. They not only survived but thrived, sending joyful shockwaves through the New York City drinks community that have reverberated across North America and globally.”

Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy came in at number 2 on this year’s list, followed by New York’s Katana Kitten at number three. There are 12 New York bars represented on this year’s list, which also includes favorites like Dante (number 6), Overstory (number 7) and last year’s winner, Attaboy at number 13.

North America’s 50 Best Bars Awards were announced at a gala ceremony at Hacienda Los Picachos in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico Thursday, attended by more than 600 top bartenders and bar owners from the U.S., Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. The annual awards are voted on by bartenders, bar owners, drinks writers and mixologists from across the continent.
