Yoga Instructor Accused in Love Triangle Killing Tracked Victim on Fitness App, Shot Her in Heart: Prosecutor

Kaitlin Armstrong is accused of killing Anna Moriah Wilson

On the first day of Kaitlin Armstrong’s murder trial, prosecutors sought to portray the yoga instructor as a jealous killer who shot Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson, an accomplished cyclist who had previously been in a relationship with Armstrong’s on-and-off boyfriend.

Authorities accuse Armstrong of shooting and killing Wilson in Austin, Texas, in May 2022, while the latter was in town for a race. Wilson had previously dated Colin Strickland, a professional cyclist, in 2021 and the two remained close despite objections from Armstrong, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors claim that Armstrong, acting out of jealousy, tracked the cyclist’s location and later shot her in the heart.

During opening statements, prosecutors alleged that Strickland had previously confronted Armstrong about the fact that she still called Wilson, and at one point changed the cyclist’s name in his phone contacts.

Prosecutors said that Armstrong had access to Strickland's email and Instagram accounts and was aware that he and Wilson had remained in contact, saying she monitored their communications on a shared iPad.

At the time she was killed, Wilson was staying with her friend Caitlin Cash. On May 10, Wilson had gone on a bike ride, which she posted on Strava, an app used to track workouts, and then texted Strickland her exact location — which is how prosecutors say Armstrong knew where the victim was staying.

That night, prosecutors allege that Armstrong shot Wilson multiple times, before standing over her a third time and firing a shot into her heart.

The defense, meanwhile, claimed that prosecutors have no hard evidence against Armstrong, saying no camera footage showed her at the scene.

Her attorney said Armstrong is "trapped in a nightmare of circumstantial evidence."

'She Was Covered in Blood'

Cash, who found Wilson and called 911, testified Wednesday. Her 911 call was also played for the jury. The witness was in tears as she recounted finding her friend.

“She was covered in blood,” Cash said Wednesday. “She was lying on her back. I bent down and tried to wake her up. Pretty quickly I called 911.”

Cash also testified that Strickland and Wilson had been a relationship in October 2021, but were no longer romantically involved at the time of her death.

Armstrong is also accused of fleeing to Costa Rica in the days after Wilson’s death, where she allegedly spent over a month on the run and paid for a nose job, with a passport that authorities say belonged to her sister.

Police were able to track her down through her yoga activities there, PEOPLE reported at the time, and she was flown back to Texas after 43 days at large.

Armstrong was identified as a person of interest in the killing of Wilson after her vehicle was seen on surveillance footage near the scene.

Earlier this month, Armstrong was accused of allegedly trying to escape custody while being escorted to a medical appointment, according to a report from CNN, citing court documents.

Video obtained by NBC affiliate KXAN shows Armstrong running in striped clothing on a walking track alongside what appears to be a parking lot as an officer runs after her.

The officer briefly trips and Armstrong is then seen trying to climb up a wall before the video ends.

She was caught after a 10-minute chase, KXAN reported.

The trial is ongoing.
