Where were you when you realized a major moment in Penelope and Colin’s love story was soundtracked to a Pitbull song? Just like the wardrobe and the set design, the music in Bridgerton continues to deliver and shape the series’ lush, romantic world. That’s partially thanks to the original score composed by Kris Bowers, as well as the instrumental covers by Vitamin String Quartet, which bring a modern pop flair to the period drama. And that includes a version of “Give Me Everything” by Mr. Worldwide himself.

“It’s a little bit outside of the sound of the covers we normally hear,” music supervisor Justin Kamps told Tudum of the song choice. “It almost leans further into a pop sound, slightly, just because the original song is such a banger pop track.”

When it comes to selecting tracks for the show, whether they’re by Taylor Swift or BTS, Kamps begins the process by thinking of “songs from the past that could maybe work for this and then also current hits that could possibly make sense.” After that, he says, “It’s really down to the script and then the themes. And sometimes, initially, it’s about what matches the choreography, and then later, it’s about what matches the scene and the emotion.”

This time around, the instrumental covers soundtracked moments that weren’t just in ball scenes. Kamps told Tudum: “We found some cute places to insert something that can play as a fun cover that doesn’t necessarily have to be attached to a dance sequence. And I think that’s been really fun this season. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Bowers, a fellow music supervisor, also spoke about the task of composing a theme for Colin and Penelope. “My thinking behind Colin and Penn was how much of it was this timidity and this two steps forward, one step back kind of thing. The theme that I wrote melodically has this shape to it that’s meant to evoke this feeling of stepping forward and leaning back,” he explained to Tudum.

If you’re having trouble clocking the music in each episode, check out the song list shared by Netflix below. The soundtrack to season 3, part 1 is available now, while the one for season 3, part 2 drops on June 13.

The rest of the episodes in season 2, as well as the soundtrack, will be released on June 13. However, Netflix has already shared that this half would include the series’ first-ever original song, recorded by Tori Kelly. It was written by Rogét Chahayed, Wesley Singerman, Taylor Dexter, and Nicole Cohen. Bowers composed an orchestral version that appears in this set of episodes.

“The fact that this is the first time an original song has been a part of Bridgerton makes the whole experience feel even more special! Really, I’m so excited that I get to be a part of this amazing show in my own way,” Kelly said in a statement. She also performed the song at the season 3 world premiere and the Bridgerton fan wedding.
