“Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan sues star Cole Hauser's competing coffee brand

This town ain't big enough for the both of 'em.

Feuds aren't just for the ranch in the world of Yellowstone.

Series creator Taylor Sheridan's Bosque Ranch recently filed a lawsuit against Yellowstone actor Cole Hauser's competing coffee brand, Free Rein, in the Northern District of Texas.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the lawsuit accuses Free Rein of "trademark infringement, unfair competition and false advertising." A point of contention involves the companies' logos, with both designed in the style of a branding iron that features interlocking letters.

"Neither Hauser nor the Defendants asked or received permission or authorization of Sheridan or Bosque Ranch to use a mark confusingly similar to the BR Brand for virtually identical goods," the complaint alleges.

Representatives for Bosque Ranch and Free Rein didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment Wednesday.

Both men are relatively new to the coffee business. Sheridan's Weatherford-based ranch partnered with Community Coffee to begin producing its eponymous brew in June. Hauser, who stars on Yellowstone as Rip Wheeler, ranch foreman and right-hand man to Kevin Costner's John Dutton, launched his company in October. Hauser sources his coffee from a small-batch facility in San Antonio that had been roasting beans for more than 25 years before Free Rein bought it.

Meanwhile, Yellowstone is in its final lap, with the back half of season 5 slated to air in November 2024. The first half of the season aired all the way back in 2022. The new episodes will mark Costner's last stint with the show, though Sheridan plans to launch a currently untitled sequel shortly after on Paramount+.

The series began in 2018, following Dutton and his family as he navigates control of the biggest cattle ranch in the country through tumultuous alliances, murder, and conflict, with many seeking to unseat him from his throne of power.

In addition to the planned sequel, Sheridan has already launched numerous prequels, including 1883 and 1923.
