Get ready for your blast from a Y2K past. Xzibit teased a return to MTV’s Pimp My Ride on Wednesday (May 1). Well, sort of. He uploaded some cover art for the project on his Instagram. The picture’s tone is more serious than the show’s previous iteration.

It also features a slickly designed American muscle car with Xzibit’s logo on it. The date “May 9th, 2024,” with a simple call to arms is present, reading, “It’s time to get back to customizing rides.” No other explanation or information has been released regarding the mysterious project.

However, it should be noted that there isn’t an MTV logo or mention of the network anywhere in the West Coast legend’s post. Additionally, the post’s call to arms, “It’s time to get back to customizing rides,” seemingly uses “customizing” instead of “pimp.” This could also point to signs that this may be something different than Pimp My Ride, like a spiritual successor to the fan-favorite show. But this is just reading the subtext and proper inference (shoutout to that English degree!).

While fans wait for the mysterious project, it’s best to explain what happened to MTV’s Pimp My Ride and how X got here.

In 2022, Xzibit detailed his soured relationship with the show’s producers and ViacomCBS. He shared documents from ViacomCBS and called them out for “cutting him out” of making “millions.” He accused the company of editing his music out of the series to avoid paying him. The Napalm artist also demanded that the show pay him for not giving him a percentage for using his likeness and his name.

“While I’m at it, hey @viacom_intl why is it you’ve made millions off the show #PimpMyRide I carried on my back and and found ways to cut me out? Like saying I would get percentages of all merch sold let alone streaming(which wasn’t even in the contract) and putting in the fine print ‘with my name and likeness’ then proceed to take my ‘name and likeness’ off of ALL the merchandise including dvd sales after season 1? To top that you guys went back and EDITED all of my music out of ALL entire seasons in order to avoid paying me for my publishing,” he typed.

“Let’s talk about worldwide syndication!!!! Wow. Hey, guys, my number is still the same. Hit me up. Or…… Can anybody hit me with a law firm who isn’t afraid of Viacom to get me right? Robert M. Bakish, President of Paramount Global, @mtv

Pimp My Ride debuted on MTV in 2004. The show featured Xzibit as the primary host. The rapper and his team of car mechanics would take somebody’s ran down car and “pimp” it. Xzibit would visit the owner’s house and get to know their personality and likes, and his team would incorporate these details into the car. The popular series ran for six seasons before being canceled in 2007.

At this time, we don’t know if the show will be on MTV; signs point to the latter, but whatever you do, Xzibit, bring back Mad Mike’s unhinged nature. The streets need it!
