XXXTentacion, Rapper and Producer, Killed in Drive-By Shooting at 20

Rapper and producer XXXTentacion died in South Florida on Monday. He was 20.

XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was shot in a drive-by shooting earlier in the day. He was transported to an area hospital where he lapsed into a coma and later died from his injuries, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed via Twitter.

According to the sheriff’s office, XXXTentacion was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, Florida, shortly before 4 p.m. when he was approached by two armed suspects.

At least one of the suspects fired a gun, striking the rapper. Both of the suspects fled in a dark-color SUV. Investigators said it appears to be a possible robbery.

The rapper, whose second album “?” debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2017, was shopping for motorcycles in Deerfield Beach outside of Miami when he was shot and killed by a gunman, according to TMZ.

Born in Plantation, Florida, XXXTentacion entered the music industry in 2013 with the release of his song “News/Flock” and later became a popular figure on the streaming service SoundCloud.

However, XXXTentacion’s rise to fame in the rap world had been rocked by legal troubles dating back to 2014 when he was sent to a youth detention center for a year on gun possession charges. In 2016, he was arrested again and charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Then in October of that same year while out on bail awaiting trial, he was arrested on charges of false imprisonment, witness tampering and aggravated battery of a pregnant victim.

XXXTentacion was released on house arrest in March 2018, after which he posted on social media that he was going back to community college to get his GED.

Aside from his legal problems, XXXTentacion also sparked controversy with a high profile social media feud with Drake dating back to January 2017.
