The Xbox's All-Digital Console Makes Perfect Sense for Xbox Game Pass Players
Xbox took some players' fears-and other players' fantasies-and made them a reality with the recently released Xbox One S All-Digital gaming console.
It was long a point of contention among gamers: Could an all-digital console work? Xbox went ahead and put it to the test with the Xbox One S All-Digital, which is exactly what it sounds like-an Xbox One S with no physical media slot. The model comes with 1TB of storage, and at $249.99, it's a $50 price reduction from the standard Xbox One S.
The All-Digital console comes with a Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 3 bundle pre-installed. While we’ve seen pre-install systems on other consoles with hit-or-miss results, the All-Digital allow you to preload games to download preemptively that then become playable right at the moment of release. It's also a perfect companion to the stellar Xbox Game Pass, a monthly subscription that gives players access to a library of over 100 games, ranging from Xbox originals all the way to new titles like Crackdown 3 to Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
While it’s unclear whether Xbox will continue with the All-Digital trend as we approach the next generation of consoles, Microsoft has really emphasized giving players choices through all-digital options. Even though it may not work nearly as well for the likes of Nintendo Switch and PlayStation owners, the all-digital method is just an obvious choice for Microsoft. Xbox already has extreme integration with Windows PC and a good amount of shareable and movable content. Buying games digitally is a much better investment on the Xbox.
And with Xbox's history of cross-platform support, most players won't have to worry about having to sell the physical edition back later, making this bundle with three great games at a $50 reduction somewhat of a no-brainer for new Xbox users-or original Xbox One owners looking to make that 4K streaming upgrade.
Microsoft has been a front-runner in software and console innovation in recent years. Where it may lack in exclusive titles, it is responsible for some of the most comprehensive features, including customizable Elite controllers, parental control software, and Adaptive controllers that allow players with physical restrictions to play. It’s unclear how this will all play out during the next-gen takeover, but it promises to be a golden age of gaming.
