‘X-Men ’97’ Teaser Triumphantly Reboots Mutants In Their ’90s Glory

The X-Men are back, baby, and Marvel Studios just unleashed the trailer for X-Men ’97. The animated series picks up where the original ’90s cartoon, X-Men, The Animated Series, ended in 1997. Fox’s original series ran for five seasons from ’92-’97 and ended with Professor Xavier dying. Now, ’97 begins with Scott Summers aka Cyclops as a bonafide captain, leading the mutant team in Professor X’s memory. It’s essentially season 6 of the original series and season 1 of a new show at the same time.

The new footage shows off a modernized take on the cartoon’s artwork, using high-definition resolution to make the characters pop. Marvel fans are treated to a glimpse at the new team in the wake of Xavier’s demise. The new teaser shows members Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Morph, Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Bishop, and more.

“We have to say vigilant, the professor entrusted us with his dream,” Cyclops can be heard saying in the teaser. Towards the end of the trailer, Magneto is seen talking to the team. He states that he “is in charge” of everything Professor X left behind, including the X-Men. Dun-dun-dun.

Interestingly enough, the show isn’t just focused on the mutants. At the 00:31 second mark of the clip, a Daily Bugle flyer can be seen wafting through the wind. At the upper right-hand corner of the document, an easter egg can be seen: a mention of Spider-Man.

Other shots in the trailer include anti-mutant protests, battles against Sentinels, a mention of the Hellfire Gala, Storm summoning a hailstorm, and the X-Men flying on the team’s iconic Blackbird aircraft.

A portion of the original X-Men TAS voice cast are also returning, according to Entertainment Weekly. OG voice cast members include Cal Dodd as Wolverine/Logan, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm/Ororo Munroe, George Buza reprising his role as Beast/Henry “Hank” McCoy, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Chris Britton as Mister Sinister/Nathaniel Essex, and, of course, Lenore Zann as Rogue. New roles include Ray Chase as Cyclops/Scott Summers, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, AJ LoCascio as Gambit/Remy LeBeau, Holly Chou as Jubilee/Jubilation Lee, JP Karliak playing Morph, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop/Lucan Bishop, Matthew Waterson portraying Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr, and Theo James in a secret role.

Beau DeMayo is the head writer of X-Men ’97. Jake Castorena will, Chase Conley, and Emi Yonemura will direct the episodes. The Newton Brothers will handle the series’ music. The Disney+ show is executive-produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and DeMayo.

X-Men ’97 will hit Disney+ on March 20.
