After creator Beau DeMayo‘s firing from X-Men ’97 this week, one of the Disney+ series’ executive producers has released a statement.

The statement comes from executive producer Brad Winderbaum, who said little about the dismissal, only mentioning DeMayo’s “excellent work” on the two seasons. The reasons for DeMayo’s firing two days ago are currently unknown, though the creator deleted his Instagram account and was not present at the series’ Hollywood premiere.

“He did excellent work writing Seasons 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for fans to see the series,” Winderbaum stated (via Variety). “The entire team came together to create a revival worthy of the X-Men’s 60-year legacy. From Stan and Jack, to Claremont, to the Lewalds, we all truly were standing on the shoulders of giants.”

X-Men ’97 will explore new stories in the iconic 90s timeline of the original series. It hails from head writer DeMayo, along with directors Jake Castorena, Chase Conley, and Emi Yonemura. Featuring music by The Newton Brothers, the series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and DeMayo.

Who is starring in X-Men ’97?

It will feature voices of Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, J.P. Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. Other X-Men characters such as Cable, Emma Frost, Sinister, Madelyne Pryor/Goblin Queen, and more are expected to appear in the series.

“The revival revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future,” reads the synopsis.
