X-Men ’97 Draws 4 Million Viewers in Disney+ Debut
In its first five days of release, the first two episodes of X-Men ’97 amassed four million views, making it Disney+’s most-watched Season 1 premiere for a (Qualifier No. 1) full-length (Qualifier No. 2) animated series since Marvel’s What If…? anthology bowed back in August 2021.
(Disney+ properly defines a “view” as total hours viewed divided by running time; X-Men: ’97 episodes are about 30 minutes each.)

A follow-up to X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as the titular band of mutants, who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before and forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

TVLine’s (grade “A”) review from Hayden Mears said that the 10-episode series “takes a beloved ’90s cartoon and, instead of sacrificing its charm on the altar of all things shiny and new, gleefully meshes vintage Marvel with real-world strife in an organic, unassuming way. It’s the follow-up the original series always deserved.”
The X-Men ’97 voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.
Beau DeMayo served as head writer, but ahead of the series’ premiere he and Marvel abruptly parted ways, for reasons yet be officially confirmed.
Season 1 episodes were directed by Jake Castorena, with music by the Newton Brothers.
