The creators apparently didn't forget about the "yellow spandex" gag from 2000's 'X-Men.'

X-Men '97 is preparing for a pretty intense three-part finale, starting with this week's "Tolerance Is Extinction, Part 1," but there's still plenty of room for levity.

The animated show's latest trailer, which dropped Monday to tease the final episodes of season 1, includes a cheeky jab at the live-action movies that fans will no doubt enjoy. In 2000's X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is getting used to his new black leather super-suit as he joins the X-Men for their first mission together.

"Do you actually go outside in these things?" he remarks in that film.

"What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?" James Marsden's Cyclops famously responds as a reference to Wolverine's yellow spandex suit from Marvel comics and X-Men: The Animated Series of the 1990s. As the sequel to that Saturday morning cartoon, X-Men '97 now references that joke in the new trailer.

"Am I going to war or a circus," Cable (Chris Potter) says when his dad, Cyclops (Ray Chase), throws him his new uniform.

"What'd you expect? Black leather?" Cyclops replies.

Funny enough, X-Men '97 season 1 showrunner Beau DeMayo, who was fired from his post prior to the show's premiere on Disney+, revealed he had written a sequel to Singer's first movie with comic book character Bastion as the villain. "When I got the [X-Men '97] job, I dug up my old IBM computer and used some of that fanfic when devising this season," DeMayo wrote on Twitter/X.

Spoiler warning: The dramatic seventh episode, "Bright Eyes," revealed Theo James as the voice of Bastion, who's been secretly pulling the strings. The new trailer is mostly a retrospective piece highlighting the success of the show so far, but it does reveal glimpses of what's to come in the forthcoming episodes.

Scenes show a human mob chasing Jubilee (Holly Chou) and Roberto (Gui Agustini) through the streets until Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith) saves them; sword-wielding Nightcrawler (Adrian Hough) and a roughed-up Wolverine (Cal Dodd) fighting a gang of Bastion's human-Sentinel hybrids; Jean (Jennifer Hale) using her telekinesis to drop into a battlefield with Cable and Cyclops; and the X-Mansion up in flames.

New episodes premiere on Disney+ every Wednesday. Watch the trailer above.
