Chris Carter’s presence in a potential X-Files reboot will be about as tough to find as Samantha Mulder.

The sci-fi series’ creator recently told The Wrap that he has no role in Ryan Coogler’s in-the-works version of the show, but that he gives the endeavor his blessing.

He added that he’d be involved “only as a cheerleader” and that the concept’s fate lies with its owners: 20th Century Fox and Disney, who’d given him a heads-up about the new project.

“I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing,” he said.

Carter first mentioned the project during a podcast interview in March 2023.  At the time, Carter said he’d recently spoken to Black Panther director Coogler, “who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,” Carter said then. “So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.”

In the new interview, the man behind Mulder and Scully added that he’d watch Coogler’s version of the show, and that he could certainly be lured back into the spooky fold under certain conditions.

If David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson “wanted to do it again,” he said, “Yeah, probably, then I would be inspired.” For the record, Anderson told reporters in 2018 that while she was thankful for the “extraordinary opportunity” to play the redheaded FBI agent in the original Fox series, two movies and two revival seasons, “it’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat. This is it for me — I’m really serious.”
