Wyclef Jean Debuts New Single “Paper Right” On ‘The Tonight Show’

Yesterday evening (Jan. 11), Wyclef Jean took the stage at The Tonight Show with a star-studded group of guests to perform his new single “Paper Right.” The song, which was officially released today (Jan. 12) features appearances by Pusha T, Lola Brooke, Capella Grey, and Flau’Jae, the last of whom couldn’t make the performance due to her collegiate duties.

The set begins as the camera pans from a table filled money stacks, a graduation cap, flowers, and fruit basket onto the stage, as Wyclef and his collaborators swiftly get the audience and viewers at home into the groove.

Singer Kofi Black, who helped pen the song, brings in the hook, crooning, “Drinks on me, got my paper right/ You can hustle, too, get your paper right/ Long before the diamonds, I was in the dark/ Graveyard shifts, had to double up” before Clef summons Lola Brooke for her opening verse.

The Brooklyn dynamo then hands off the mic to Pusha T, who emerges from stage left to reel off an inspiring stanza. Kofi Black and the backup vocalists get room to shine prior to Capella Grey’s inclusion, while Wyclef rounds things off by providing breezy Caribbean vibes.

According to Wyclef, “Paper Right” is more than a mere celebratory party-starter, but served as an opportunity to promote financial literacy to his various generations of fans. “I approached this song wanting to make eople feel good and dance on the floor while delivering the message that we can celebrate saving money and building wealth just as hard as we celebrate spending it,” the Grammy Award winner said of the track.

“‘Get your paper right’ is the anthem because we need to educate ourselves from young to old on how money works, how to really make building generational wealth a reality for everyone in our communities, retire comfortably, and break economic cycles moving forward. ‘Drinks on me’ is so much sweeter to holler knowing you’ve taken the steps to get your paper right for you and your future.”

Proceeds from “Paper Right” will be donated to First Generation Investors, a non-profit organization “dedicated to educating underserved high school students with empowering tools and knowledge from the world of finance.”
