Wyclef Jean gave a huge shoutout to incarcerated rapper Tsu Surf during the 2023 MTV VMAs, calling for the battle rap star’s freedom.

On Tuesday (Sept. 12), Jean was at the VMAs to present Shakira with the 2023 MTV Video Vanguard Award on Tuesday night, where he shouted his fellow Brick City rep. “Right about now, New Jerusalem, New Jersey! Free the Wave,” the hitmaker proclaimed while introducing the Latin pop star. “Y’all give it up for Shakira.”

Earlier this year, Tsu Surf pled guilty to committing conspiracy to violate the RICO act, and pleaded guilty to transporting firearms as a convicted felon. The rapper was initially arrested in October 2022 at a New Jersey home after a standoff with authorities, during which he barricaded himself and a woman inside the home. The rapper ultimately surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody and has since remained behind bars.

Terms of Surf’s plea deal include the forfeiture of any property obtained as part of this larger RICO conspiracy and that the plea deal must be honored in order to avoid additional RICO charges. The rapper, who has yet to be sentenced, faces up to 30 years in prison.

Prior to his arrest, Tsu Surf and Wyclef worked with one another in 2020 on Arsonal Da Rebel’s “Proceed With Caution” alongside Shotgun Suge. The following year, Wyclef listed Surf among the battle rappers who make great music outside of the battle rap circuit.
