Writers Theatre announces 2024-2025 season
Writers Theatre in Glencoe has announced its new subscription season.
The five-show slate launches with the Chicago premiere of the 2016 Broadway musical “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” (Sept. 5-Oct. 27), which reunites director/choreographer Katie Spelman and music director Matt Deitchman after their previous collaboration on Writers’ “Once.” Penned by Dave Malloy, “Natasha” is based on Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” and would seem ideal for Writers’ immersive performances space.
Later in the fall, the longtime Chicago director Kimberly Senior returns to Writers to direct the one-person play “Every Brilliant Thing” by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahue, as previously seen (in a separate production) in a long run at Chicago’s Windy City Playhouse. That emotional piece runs Oct. 31 through Jan. 5, 2025.
In the winter, Vanessa Severo will star as both herself and the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo in “Frida … A Self Portrait” (Jan. 23-Feb. 23, 2025). The play is penned by Severo and directed by Joanie Schultz, returning to her former stomping grounds.
Next spring, Writers artistic director Braden Abraham brings Brian Friel’s Irish drama “Translations” (April 3-May 4, 2025) to the Writers stage before the season concludes with the world premiere of the locally based “Dhaba on Devon Avenue” penned by Madhuri Shekar, directed by Chay Yew, the former artistic director of Victory Gardens Theater, and co-produced with TimeLine Theatre Company. That last show, set on and around Chicago’s famous Indian restaurant and retail district, runs June 19-July 27, 2025. Given the popularity of Hulu’s “The Bear,” the show has ambitions beyond Glencoe.
