WGA East Says It’s Investigating Univision Layoffs That Affect Fusion Staff

The WGA East says it’s “pained” by the Univision layoffs that will include 15 people at Fusion’s digital platform — which voted last week to collectively bargain with the union. But the guild adds in a statement to members at Fusion.net, The Root, and The Gizmodo Media Group that it’s still “gathering and analyzing all of the relevant details” about the reorganization including “the operational changes, the individual layoff decisions, and the company’s analysis of the expansion of employees covered by the current union contract.”

WGAE urged members to “communicate with one another and with us.”

Univision holds that Fusion’s WGA-represented employees who will lose their jobs can be covered by the terms of Gizmodo’s collective bargaining agreement, the union says. That would entitle them to two weeks pay for each year of service — with a minimum of eight weeks — as well as extended health benefits.

The 250 layoffs at Univision will not affect Gizmodo or The Root.
