World Series MVP George Springer and children's choir surprise Hurricane Harvey victims

While the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando dominated the baseball headlines this week, Houston Astros star George Springer was busy spreading holiday cheer to some people whose spirits needed a lift.

Joined by the Houston Children’s Chorus, Springer made a surprise visit to The Residences on Emancipation, a 295-bed housing community in downtown Houston that is serving as a temporary home for Houston area residents displaced by Hurricane Harvey.

Together, Springer and the children’s choir sang Christmas Carols and spent time interacting with over 100 residents. The outing was made possible by megabus.com, which so far has raised $30,000 in support of Hurricane Harvey relief.

“Home for the holidays’ takes on a different meaning for many in Houston this year,” Springer told the Houston Chronicle this week. “It’s important to keep those affected top-of-mind, and to do whatever we can to help, so I jumped at the opportunity to team up with megabus.com to spread a bit of holiday cheer.”

Springer, who was named the 2017 World Series MVP after helping the Astros to their first ever championship, is used to sharing the spotlight on Houston’s loaded roster. Between Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander, there’s enough star power there to make most other teams jealous.

Here though, Springer was happy to be a background player.

The real stars of the show were the Houston Children’s Chorus. They put on a great show here, and they’ll undoubtedly do so again on Saturday when they present the “Kids and Christmas Pops Concert” at Alice Pratt Brown Hall at Rice University. The concert begins at 5:00 p.m. local time. We hope Houston area residents will support them as much as they’ve supported those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
