World’s Largest Cruise Ship Arrives in Miami for the First Time Ahead of Maiden Voyage

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is breaking even more records ahead of its maiden voyage this month.

Officially setting sail on Jan. 27, the ship has already made history by holding the title of world’s largest cruise ship. It hit another milestone on Wednesday when it arrived in Miami for the first time in preparation for its debut sailing.

The massive ship was welcomed to Port Miami with banner planes and fireboat salutes, according to a press release from Royal Caribbean. Its grand arrival was celebrated by locals, fans of the cruise line and employees who are all eager to witness the monumental vessel for themselves.

Along with boasting the world’s largest waterpark at sea, Icon will feature a sprawling three-story accommodation called “The Ultimate Townhouse” that the cruise line describes as a "sprawling adventure-filled pad” equipped with an in-suite slide, a karaoke station and more hidden treasures.

The ship will also debut over "40 ways to dine, drink and be entertained," as well as eight "neighborhoods" and 20 decks on board, according to the company. Thrill-seekers can have the time of their lives at 154 feet above the ocean while exploring the Crown’s Edge ropes course experience.

Icon of the Seas will offer vacationers a seven-night sailing through either the Eastern or Western Caribbean from its Miami starting point. It will also make a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas.

The cruise line is also debuting the island’s first-ever adults-only getaway called Hideaway Beach, which is “an all-day experience complete with a private beach and pools, new dedicated spots for drinks and bites, exclusive cabanas, live music and more,” according to the release.

After construction for Icon of the Seas was completed at Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the ship went through its first phase of sea trials in June 2023. It has officially replaced Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world.
