WORCESTER — Firefighters extinguished a vehicle fire just feet from a downtown shopping center Saturday.
The fire appeared to start in the upper section of a NYC United Express passenger bus and quickly engulfed the vehicle in front of 90 Madison Place, a strip mall-type retail space with several businesses including a six-story, low-rise office building on Madison Street.
After receiving the call at 1:23 p.m., firefighters arrived on the scene and struck a second alarm as thick, black smoke blanketed the area over Francis J. McGrath Blvd. and nearby Polar Park.
Firefighters also went floor to floor of the adjacent building to evacuate people there and check for possible extension of the fire, according to radio transmissions.
The Fire Department said Sunday the building sustained only minor damage, with a few broken windows and some signage that was burned.
There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
