Woody Harrelson Explains That He Studied To Be A Minister And Was Mentored By Mike Pence
Unexpected Information
There have been some wild news stories in 2019, but even the Crazy Headline Generator couldn't have come up with this one. While he was a guest on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast, Zombieland: Double Tap's Woody Harrelson admitted that he considered becoming a minister when he was in college... and that Mike Pence was something of a mentor.
A Possible Career Path
He told Maron:
"I was supposed to become a minister. I did a sermon when I was 17, and I did another one at Hanover College. And this is kind of bizarre, but Mike Pence was two years older than me at Hanover and he was kind of the guy that led me through it."
When Maron asked if Pence was "the frightening guy," Harrelson had a relatively measured response.
"No, not at all. Look, we weren't buddies or anything, but you know he was very religious and he was the guy who headed the thing for students who wanted to do religious things."
Harrelson went on to leave Christianity behind, but he explained that he still has a great respect for the faith.
A Past Brush With Trump
However, that early brush with Vice President Pence wasn't Harrelson's only dealing with future members of the Trump administration. He told a story about meeting President Trump long before the 2016 election:
"Jesse Ventura he called me and he says I am coming to New York and I'm having dinner with Trump. He's gonna try and convince me to be his running mate for the 2004 Democratic ticket."
According to Harrelson, Trump had an obvious "God complex."
"It's just that he just wanted to talk about himself and he does continually."
Beyond Narcissistic
This isn't the first time about that Harrelson has discussed that 2002 dinner, telling Esquire this summer:
"It got so bad I had to go outside and burn one before returning to the monologue monopoly. Listen, I came up through Hollywood, so I’ve seen narcissists. This guy was beyond. It blew my mind. He did say one thing that was interesting, though."
