Some won't like the celebrity John Oliver pegged to replace a Confederate monument in S.C.

On Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, the host thought it was absurd that there are a reported 1,500 Confederate memorials in the U.S, including more than 700 statues and 10 military bases.

Of the military bases, Oliver said, “There are U.S. military bases named for Confederate officers and they were the enemy! They killed U.S. soldiers! That’s like finding out that Nancy Kerrigan named her child Tonya Harding. Why would you do that?”

Oliver suggested Confederate statues be put in museums and in their place towns should erect statues to commemorate more positive role models. For example, Atlanta, Texas, could make a statue honoring Bessie Coleman, who was the first African-American female pilot.

After making a few suggestions for specific people in specific towns, Oliver made a surprising pick for Charleston, S.C., revealing a real-life Stephen Colbert.

Oliver said, “Why have a divisive confederate statue when instead that pedestal can be filled by your favorite son, the actual Stephen Colbert, who will stand up there all day, telling you fun facts about your wonderful town?”

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
