“Wonka” Beats “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” to Rule the Holiday Box Office

Timotheé Chalamet's 'Wonka' made $22.7 million at the domestic box office this past weekend and has surpassed $140 million since its Dec. 15, 2023 release

Wonka is showing staying power at the box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures' Timotheé Chalamet-led musical, which initially released in theaters Dec. 15, made $22.7 million at the domestic box office last weekend, outshining runner-up Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($18.2 million), per Box Office Mojo.

Wonka initially opened to some $39 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. The Aquaman sequel took the box office's top spot in the Dec. 22-24 weekend when it grossed $27.7 million upon release. According to Box Office Mojo, Wonka's success this past weekend has driven its domestic gross up to $140 million, with the film collecting $384 million worldwide so far.

Universal Pictures' animated film Migration made $17 million at the domestic box office over New Year's weekend, while The Color Purple made $11.7 million on top of the $18.1 million it earned on Christmas Day alone. Multiple outlets reported that the Blitz Bazawule-directed musical earned the largest Christmas opening since 2009, when Sherlock Holmes made $24.6 million on its first day of release.

Wonka stars 28-year-old Chalamet as a young version of Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, whom Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp have both portrayed on the big screen. The movie places Wonka on the cusp of founding his iconic chocolate factory as he runs into trouble at an inn owned by Olivia Colman's Mrs. Scrubett and by a variety of villainous chocolate company owners who wish to keep Wonka's products off the market.

Wonka has proven popular with audiences and critics alike; it holds approval from 83% of its 294 Rotten Tomatoes reviews from critics, while 91% of the site's users who have rated the movie reported enjoying it.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a sequel to 2018's Aquaman, follows 44-year-old Momoa's Arthur Curry / Aquaman years after the events of the first film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II reprises his role from the first film as David Kane / Black Manta, this time armed with a powerful new weapon in his attempts to kill Arthur, while Patrick Wilson reprises his role as Orm, Arthur's half-brother and the former ruler of Atlantis.

New wide movie releases at the box office for the first weekend of 2024 include Jessica Chastain's new film Memory and the horror movie Night Swim, per Box Office Mojo.
